DS has droopy eyelid - anyone had the same?

Hello,

Just wondering if anyone has experienced anything similar to the below?

DS had a very droopy left upper eyelid this morning. Never had it before that I can recall (he's nearly 13 months).

No redness, discharge, etc so don't think it's an infection. He does have a cold at the moment with a runny nose and is a bit up and down mood wise but is still his usual self. He's playing, laughing and smiling, eating still but his appetite has gone a bit, etc.

I know that sometimes things like this can be caused by trauma. He was born via Forceps and had a rather nasty bruise from it over his left eye and eyebrow. I've also always thought there is a slight indent / his eyebrow is a different shape to the other but it's so slight it's not noticeable unless you were really looking for it. He's never been diagnosed with anything or had any issues since birth to do with this. Just the random droopiness this morning in his eye made me think about it.

It seems better now that he's had a nap which I find a bit baffling too...

I'm trying not to Google as I know it'll probably come up with all sorts of horror stories. Going to call GP tomorrow - tried this morning but was 37th in the call queue and no appts left for today by the time I got through 🤦🏼‍♀️

So in the meantime, I was just wondering if anyone has experienced the same and what the outcome was?

Thanks!

Are you sure he hasn't had it before ,? My son has ptosis and it's worse when he is tired and can change at different times.

I was born with a droopy eyelid (well both really, but one worse than the other). It's called ptosis. I think you can randomly develop it and it isn't always congenital. But best wait to see what the GP says.
My mum always thought mine was due to my forceps delivery as I had two big bruises down each side of my face, though I'm not sure if that's what caused it.

As @gunnersgold says, mine's also worse when I'm tired or run down. Especially the left one which is the worse one.

@Frazzlerock it's a genetic defect for want of a better description . My son has epicanthal folds and a wide mouth . When I get letters from his doctors they list his defects on the top of the letter . A lovely eh! 🙄

Does his mouth seem even when he smiles? A droopy eyelid was the first sign of my Bell's Palsy, which can be triggered by a virus. I would get him seen to be honest, because if it is that, it's important to start on steroids ASAP (to halt progress - it's not dangerous, just annoying!).

Thanks for the quick responses Smile. I'll keep this in mind when I see the GP tomorrow with him. I got pics from this morning to show the GP, as if you looked at him now you probably wouldn't say there is anything going on with his eye.

I'm fairly confident he hasn't had it before. I did look through pics of him from the last year, whilst he was napping today, to see if maybe I'd captured him with a droopy eyelid without realising it at the time, but I couldn't see anything like that.

Seems unnecessary to do that @gunnersgold Sad
I've been referred for surgery (2nd time) as its now affecting my sight, but this was back in September and I've still heard nothing so who knows if it'll happen. I'm not even sure it'll work as it didn't really the first time.
Sorry for the hijack @Lottie917!

gunnersgold · 31/01/2022 16:16

@Frazzlerock I know ! I'm over it now as he is 10 but it was awful when he was little !
I haven't had his eye operated on because it doesn't affect his eyesight and they couldn't be sure it wouldn't be worse after the sling . He wears glasses anyway and you can't see it . Most people don't notice until I point it out or he is tired and they clock it!

Me and both my children have a ptosis. I didn't notice it in myself or my daughter but my son's was more pronounced and got picked up by the HV when he was a toddler. It hasn't caused any problems and as he's got older it's less obvious. I'd see your GP and then can refer you to opthalmology.
