Nappy changing an almost 1yo

Any tips?

It's become worse lately so we have started using pull-ups full time but she basically just wants to roll away and crawl off. She can't walk yet but she can stand (when she wants to)

Wet nappies are hard enough but poos are something else. We have been using a changing table still for some changes and it's still difficult but at least she can't crawl off (although she tries). But the changing table has a weight limit and she's close to meeting it now.

Any tips or advice much appreciated, feel like I'm missing something

That takes me back! 😀
You just have to pin them down or distract them with something, and get very quick at changing nappies!

Somethingsnappy · 31/01/2022 15:45

I have a bowl full of really interesting objects next to the changing table. Things he hasn't seen before. He takes a breath to yell and squirm, I hold out the toy and all is peaceful for a few moments Grin

This is a good idea. I assume you have to keep changing stuff though? I give her all sorts to inspect just for a moment to get the poop off her bum. Socks, bottles, hair bobbles, other nappies, pictures, my phone, hairbrush

But once she's seen it a few times it nolonger holds her attention

It's turning nappy changing into a full on event

Distraction is key for us. I change DS on the mat on the floor as he's too much of a roll risk off a changing table🤦🏼‍♀️ been doing it this way for about 2 months now (he's 13 months nearly) and I always make sure I've got toys to hand to keep him busy.

On the very rare occasion he really needs to be changed and no toys work, I give him something he otherwise wouldn't be allowed, for example, my hairbrush or the bepanthen tube. I'm directly supervising him with whatever it is and it gets taken away again as soon as we're done. Probably not the best method but needs must sometimes!

I fold legs back (do it gently) and hold calves and hands (with one hand) up to a child’s chest while doing the clean up with the other. You need to organise your workspace for this to work consistantly - ie wipes / change bags / nappies / clothes / santitiser all easily accessible. Once the poo has been wiped we have a bit of a pause to have a giggle while applying nappy cream and then the child will ‘help’ me put the pull up on. Then get baby dressed put them down and wash your hands.

Ozanj · 31/01/2022 15:52

Stand up nappy changes also work

Somethingsnappy · 31/01/2022 16:09

Yes, I keep changing things. I use all sorts... Feathers, robust jewellery of mine, little toys that make noise or have movement, literally anything that my baby hasn't seen before and he's fascinated to explore.

SittingontheSidelines · 31/01/2022 16:20

I agree, stand up nappy changes. It then becomes something you do together rather than something you do to them. Really easy once you get the knack.

SuperSocks · 31/01/2022 16:32

Yes! I've been a nanny for 15 years and the answer is... random crap!! Seriously, get a basket of random miscellaneous stuff they're ONLY allowed to hold while you're changing their nappy. The second you're done it goes back in the basket and they get down to play. Big hits in my experience are:

Measuring spoons on a ring
Old dead mobile phones, especially a flip phone
Expired credit cards in an old wallet
Happy Meal, cracker or Kinder egg crap (obviously nothing chokable if they're little!)
Key ring with clean/blunt keys and different key fobs
Pipe cleaners twisted together, a mix of sparkly, extra fluffy and normal ones.
A mini keyring measuring tape
A lemon. Just a real actual lemon (washed) Ditto a potato, or carrot, or any random large fruit or vegetable
A snow globe
An envelope with an old card inside
A spice jar, empty but unwashed so it still has a strong basil/cinnamon/whatever smell. Not chili or anything that'd really sting if they got residue in their eyes. Honestly these are a huge hit
The obvious ones - the wipes packet or bum cream tube - they just love these!!
A night light candle in its little silver holder thingy
Anything 'real' that they can't hurt themselves with, and don't normally have access to. This is what babies and children really want more than any exciting/flashing/noisy toys, and as they're normally not allowed they're 'high value' and great for emergency distraction

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 31/01/2022 16:39

Change them on the floor with your leg over the torso (not pressing down) and a couple of toys which are kept for changes as a distraction. Or tv.

N4ish · 31/01/2022 16:41

Stand up nappy changes worked well for all but the most awfully messy changes.

Mischance · 31/01/2022 16:42

I used to provide a small snack - biscuit, bit of banana etc. - while dealing with nappies at that age. Then you have to act quickly!!!

Mischance · 31/01/2022 16:43

Scrap the pull-ups - all they do is spread the shit around.

Dontfuckingsaycheese · 31/01/2022 16:51

You can rip the sides of pull-ups to get them off @Mischance

I ditto stand ups. Most more dignified for all concerned!

SuperSocks · 31/01/2022 17:05

Question for those who use pull-ups - how do you clean their bottom? Surely a tiddler trying to run away is harder to deal with and spreads muck faster than them rolling and crawling away? When I've worked with a family that uses pullups I just lie tiddler down anyway to get them off and clean their bottom, and find tab nappies easier to put on so don't see the advantage?

NannyR · 31/01/2022 17:14

I'm another one who finds normal nappies much easier and quicker to use than pull up nappy pants. I also change nappies on the floor rather than on a table.

grey12 · 31/01/2022 17:56

Yes pull ups are better.

The best trick is to put your leg over their tummy to pin them down Wink (you're sideways to them)

110APiccadilly · 31/01/2022 20:55

We have a changing table, and there's a shelf above it. I've stuck some pictures on the underside of the shelf, and it's a constant - "Can you point at the cow?" "What does the cow say?" "Yes, moo, that's right, clever girl," and so on. It works for us, but she is very into making animal sounds (also slightly older - she's 14 months).

RedRobyn2021 · 31/01/2022 20:59

@SuperSocks amazing suggestions here thank you for this
