Dandruff or Nits? (Pics)

Unsure if this is dandruff (or dry scalp) or nits?

Dd's scalp looks insanely dry and some of it does flake off, theres none behind her ears or the back of neck where nits usually like to hang out, its all the top and crown. She is itchy so im really unsure.

I am so paranoid about it being lice. I took her to a headlice clinic last time i was like this and they said it wasnt lice/nits it was dry scalp so im thinking is it that again.

But...

Some of the white bits do sort of slide off the hair shaft instead of falling off when touched which is why im doubting.

Is it gross to take her to a pharmacy to double check? I just obviously don't want to treat the wrong thing.

can't you get a special comb, use that over white paper and see what drops out? hard to say from pix

MissM2912 · 29/01/2022 21:17

Those are the shells that are left behind. You need a nittygritty comb

dementedpixie · 29/01/2022 21:19

Use a nit comb to see if there are any lice. Use lots of conditioner. Treat the dry scalp too

my dc haven't had them yet so I'm no expert but they are absolutely lice eggs.

Peachandpearl · 29/01/2022 21:19

Is it itchy?

dementedpixie · 29/01/2022 21:20

You cant possible tell from the picture whether they are nits (empty egg cases). Use conditioner and comb to see if there are any lice

CPGyellowwallpaper · 29/01/2022 21:22

Sorry that looks like egg casings.

Treat her with nit solution and a decent comb ASAP and again every 5 days til they are completely gone.

Use tea tree shampoo to keep they at bay

itwasntaparty · 29/01/2022 21:22

Nits

dementedpixie · 29/01/2022 21:29

Do the conditioner and combing first to see if there's any live lice

eurochick · 29/01/2022 21:35

Looks like nits to me.

Throughabushbackwards · 29/01/2022 21:40

Our DS had this. I spent the first few weeks of the summer holiday treating and combing his hair like mad. We never found a live one and in the end came to the conclusion that the white things were DEC plugs - like small whiteheads - basically little pods of oil that form in the hair follicle.

Justkites · 29/01/2022 21:41

Ive done the conditioner and tissue thing, all came out clear/white

Wouldn't the lice show as black?

OP posts:
dementedpixie · 29/01/2022 21:42

Yes lice would be black. Try treating the dry scalp instead

Hair casts was exactly what the lady in the nit clinic said it was! What is the treatment for that do you know?

ItsAHardKn0ckLife1 · 29/01/2022 21:46

This looks exactly like my DDs hair. Was convinced she had headlice. Like your DDs, the bits sort of slid down the hair shaft, and didn’t flake off like you’d expect with dandruff/dry skin. She has to use Tgel to keep it under control, if she goes a week or so without using, it’s back to looking like nits! Sad

Throughabushbackwards · 29/01/2022 21:48

We laid off washing it for a while, we think his scalp was producing too much oil and it was even worse after the barrage of nit treatments!

ItsAHardKn0ckLife1 · 29/01/2022 21:48

@Throughabushbackwards that’s interesting, thank you. Have never heard of this, off to do some reading Smile

nomorefrogs · 29/01/2022 21:49

It's nits.

Mo1911 · 29/01/2022 21:50

Grab one of the flakes between your nails, if it sticks to the hair then it's a nit, but if it just comes off easily it's flakey skin. Nits hang onto the hair so they can take a bit of pulling to get off, skin doesn't. 😊

OneMoreTimeThen · 29/01/2022 21:52

DD had this and like PPs did the comb etc, it was a dry scalp - I found a patch of dry skin. TGel has sorted it out, we use every few washes and it's not come back

Justkites · 29/01/2022 21:53

Thanks for the T gel tip i will try that

OP posts:
Throughabushbackwards · 29/01/2022 21:54

And yes, like pp, if it comes back we use TGel and that sorts it.

When you say stick, as in doesnt come off using nails? They did glide off the hair, it didnt fall off like a flake but didnt stick either really

I took a picture of one off my daughters head with an iPhone and then zoomed in really really close on the picture and you could see quite clearly that it was a lice.
