Have I caused shaken baby syndrome

I’m so scared I might have caused SBS, I was standing up burping my baby and i fell back into bed as I misjudged how far back I had set the pillows, when i landed his head had snapped back & forth (I have a next to me cot so I can’t get into bed in a normal way)
I should have put baby down instead of holding him when getting into bed!
It wasn’t violent at all, but I wasn’t properly supporting his head and now I feel sick with worry.

Have I caused my baby to have shaken baby syndrome?

I’m not even a first time parent so I thought this time I would have less anxiety, it’s something I am going on medication for very soon.

I very much doubt it, Shaken baby is a very violent act, it won’t be caused by what happened! A quick Google says it won’t be cause bu even falling with your baby! It’s a specific act that involves them violently snapping their head back and forth multiple times- try not to worry! I was the same with my baby too, I was convinced I was rocking her too hard and had hurt her

Don’t ask us, only you can know how bad it was, take him to hospital if you think there is a problem. Accidents do happen though op so don’t blame yourself. Sure he is ok but best to check.

Extremely unlikely , call 111 if you want some medical advice , they will assess his behaviour and tell you what to look out for
I think baby will be fine

It doesn’t sound like it. Like others say that’s due to a specific violent act rather than the head flopping unsupported for a moment. Is the baby responding as normal?

TyrannosaurusRegina · 29/01/2022 06:29

His head wouldn't "snap back and forth" just from you falling back into a pillow while holding him surely?

AtlasPine · 29/01/2022 06:32

We can’t tell from what you have written. If you are seriously worried, it might be best to have it checked out. Do you have any support at home? Is there anyone in real life who knows you well that you can talk with about this?

KitchenTowel · 29/01/2022 07:24

I'm pretty sure it's fine. I've had this happen a few times where I fall onto the bed holding ds and then wonder if the fall was too fast. I don't think it's dangerous if you've basically just plonked yourself on the bed but yes call 111 if you str concerned.

How old is your baby?

Belle82 · 29/01/2022 08:13

Thank you so much.
@unicornpower I’ve had this same fear
I spoke with my husband about it and he came across this and some simulation videos.
It was no where even close.

I’m sorry, being 5am and on 2 hours sleep the words I used weren’t that great. It would be more accurate to say lolling back and forth, everything looks a bit more concerning in the middle of the night.

He’s acting snd responding perfectly.
Thank you for all the reassurance 💐

Not sure how someone on here can say if there's something wrong with your baby. Take him to get checked if you are at all concerned

Namechangegardens · 29/01/2022 22:00

I did similar with baby when he was tiny, maybe 2 weeks old, in middle of the night - I leant him over for a burp and miscalculated my arm position when putting him back in cradle position and head "snapped" back, I was really worried but reassured when I read of similar experiences - as others have said, shaken baby syndrome is caused by extremely violent motion. However you could definitely call 111 for advice if you're still feeling worried about it xx
