leaking nappy wraps

Has anyone ever experienced leaking nappy wraps? I use motherease rikki and airflow and Popolini wraps and all of them seem to start leaking after a while. Non of them are very old. It's not round the edges leaking but through the wrap as if the pee is seeping through. I use non-bio powder, wash them at 60 and dry them on the line never in the tumble dryer. Any suggestions what I'm doing wrong? Cheers

do you soak your nappies? If so...do you sometimes soak your wraps too?

JennyH11 · 29/12/2007 15:39

No, I usually store them dry in a bucket and wash each day. If they're particularly pongy I put a few drops of tea tree essential oil in the bucket.

Aha! Tea tree oil and PUL don't go too well together, if you get neat tea tree oil near the PUL it can degrade it pretty quickly. Over time (sometimes not long) soaking wraps in water plus a couple of drops of tea tree oil will have the same effect.

That is the only thing I can think of - unless you are leaving your nappies on for too long.

Ah I hadn't thought about the tea tree oil. I'll see if that makes a difference. Thanks.

You probably can't undo the damage the tea tree oil may have already done. I have heard some people recommend a hot tumble dry to solve leaky PUL wraps but I've never tried it myself (not brave enough - wraps too expensive!)

Hopefully someone else will come along and give you a less expensive solution than having to buy new wraps

I've tumble dried my wraps without any problems.

really? on a hot tumble cycle?

juuule · 29/12/2007 20:36

Yep. They don't need it really, do they, as they dry so quickly anyway. But I've stuck them in the drier now and then with nappies and other stuff.

cool, well maybe it is worth giving that a try then Jenny.

Seems like some manufacturers say the hot temp is good for the PUL and tightens it up -they state that PUL is designed to be autoclaved so can take a tumble drier..others say no way.

I dry my nappies on a cool setting and my wraps have survived that when I've forgotten to take them out

I'm pretty sure motherease tell you to wash at 40...? Can't check as they are all in DS's room and he's asleep but that's what I always do anyway. I do the nappies at 60 by themselves and the wraps in a main wash at 40.

coby · 29/12/2007 22:09

My airflows say 60 (captured DD2 as she was passing earlier just to check )

I've post this before... but also worth checking the fit of your wraps and popper vests (if your DC wears them).

We were experiencing leaks when DS1's popper vest got too small and was pulling up around the crotch of his wrap. By going up a wrap size and sorting out the vest problem the leaks were eliminated.
