Hello all,
First time ever posting on here and just looking for a bit of advice.
Im a FTM and have a 13w old DD who has never been a great napper and would often go upto 10hrs in the day with no naps.
Started using the Huckleberry App and DD started to nap approximately 30/45 upto 4 times a day and 12 hours at night with a dream feed at 10.30pm and a wake up around 4am for a feed.
In the last week or so she is back to not napping whatsoever, I pop her down awake in her travel cot/next to me swaddled with a dummy and she will either just fight sleep or scream the house down. She has white noise as she has this throughout the night. I've tried cuddling her to sleep but she squirms and stretches and crys, bouncer, swing, sling. She will sleep in the car and sometimes buggy but I can't always afford to go out everyday in it. No naps have resulted in her crying and screaming most of the day and then is a nightmare to settle at night. She will only settle in her next to me at night so most nights I go to bed at 7pm after the bedtime routine and sit in the dark with white noise blasting whilst she sleeps as the TV noise and lights annoy her so she can't drop off and has started waking every 2 to 3 hours for a feed and will drink around 4oz each time!!
Does anyone have any advice to help her settle? I suffer with anxiety and I'm really beginning to struggle as most days we have a constant battle of trying to get her to sleep and when she doesn't trying to settle her as she's beside herself with tiredness 😔.

Sorry for the long post and ty xx

Growth spurt?

You sound like you’re doing everything. But waking and feeding more frequently are always signs that DS is going through a spurt, lasts about 1-2 weeks then sort of settles back again. He’s a good napper but a rubbish night sleeper, and at 4.5 months still feeds every 2-3 hours.

Swaddle? Dummy?

DS sleeps in a gro bag as couldn’t get on with swaddling, and I never did a dummy but in hindsight probably would have been width a go.

There is a sleep regression at 3/4 months as their sleep cycle changes and they become much more aware of whats going on.

Why can't you take her out in the pram everyday? I would do that if she's struggling to fall asleep, much better than her getting wound up.

I know it’s not for everyone but we do get out in the pram every single day. It’s good for my sanity and it’s good for the baby too- he naps but also lots of fresh air and if he hasn’t napped he will nap in the pram.

Going for walks is free and great for both of you, and sleep.

BrambleRoses · 25/01/2022 22:07

Babies do tend to sleep better in the fresh air, although I sympathise as it’s really cold at the moment!

To be honest, she will probably still prefer contact naps at 3 months. DS was five months before I could put him down for a nap. I know it’s a cliched MN response but do you have a sling? DS would nap peacefully for hours in the sling as long as I kept walking! It was good for my step count, I suppose!

Will she take a dummy?

I used to have to do the bed at 7 thing - it’s a pain but it’s not forever Flowers

Rinny27 · 25/01/2022 22:27

Ty all for all your replies.

Yes she will take the dummy but it often falls out and it wakes her so I have to keep popping it in to try and resettle her.

Sorry we do go for walks (I have to get out in the fresh air for my own good!!), I try and aim for a walk a day as long as its not raining but I was just wondering if there was anything I was missing that I could do at home also. Most of the time she sleeps in her pram even if it's only for 20 mins so I will keep on with the walks.

@BrambleRoses I do have a sling a fabric one however she is 12lb now and doesn't seem to offer much support. Which one do you use? X

You just tie the sling tighter for more support. I have a hefty baby and it still works fine. At that age we used to make sure the pram was clean and push it inside and then gradually go sit on the sofa once asleep but jump up again to rock if needed. OK if you have the space I guess!

Put the pushchair up in the living room, clip her into it and walk around the room/house til she falls asleep. Keep rocking it for a few mins after she falls asleep then leave her in it for her nap.
