Advice how to help my little one fall asleep at night

Hi,

At night time it's an fight to get my 5 month old to sleep he used to get put into bed and fell straight to sleep and now when we put him in bed, he wide awake, blowing raspberries or twisting himself and trying to get onto his side as he just recently started to roll over and while he doing this he starts to scream and sometimes ends up getting his foot stuck between the bars, I was wondering if there was any way to stop him from trying to go onto his side/ twisting himself or even infact to get him to go straight to sleep again like he used to. Once he is asleep he's doesn't wake up until 7/8 in the morning.

Thank you

Is he maybe under tired? How many naps does he have a day and what length are they, and what time is he going to bed? How much awake time does he have before bed? Does he get plenty of time to practice his rolling etc during the day?

Sounds like a sleep regression which can happen when they are learning a new skill. My son went through one around a month ago, and it took me hours to get him to sleep. It passed after 2 weeks thankfully, and he's back to falling asleep himself after his last bottle.

Could you put him in a sleeping bag at night to stop his foot stuck?

Put in gro bag so won’t get feet caught

What’s his routine like and what time putting to bed

He has a few naps throughout the day the most he probably has is about 3/4 and they're like cat naps, he goes to bed around 8/9... but when we're downstairs he fast asleep or falling asleep. As soon as we put him in bed he's awake, and he's has a a good few hours on floor rolling about. He is usually good with his routine he knows when it's bed time and when his last bottle is but these past two weeks where it's been hours to get him to finally settle even after his last bottle

8/9 is late for a baby

May take a few days but shift routine and body clock to this plus then when weaning add meals in

7 wake up bottle
8 breakfast
9/10 nap
11 bottle
12 lunch
1/3 sleep
3 bottle
430 tea or cat nap of 20mins no more if they are tired
6 bath tho don’t need every night
630/7 bottle and bed
11df for some babies who need it

It’s called the 234, they are awake for 2 then 3 then 4 hours and helps routine establish sleep and not get overtired

It could be a regression due to learning a new skill, my DS went through one for a couple of days right when he learnt to roll.

However one other thing is naps and wake windows possibly, so with my DS his sleeping went to crap but it turns it it's because he was ready to drop a nap, so at 5 months he went down to only 3 naps a day. Out of curiosity what time is he waking in the mornings?

Every baby is different but for my little one what works best is 1st nap 2 hours after waking, 2nd nap is 2 hours 15 minutes after waking from 1st nap, 3rd nap is 2 hours 15 minutes after waking from 2nd nap and bedtime is 2 hours 30 minutes after waking from 3rd nap. What works for me is to allow DS floor time in that last wake window before bed, this seems to help tire him out but also stop him from wanting to practice rolling etc in bed as he's just had practice. I also around 30 minutes before bed dim the lights, and put calming music on to start winding down before I take him through to bed and that seems to help him to understand play time is over.

Hopefully this doesn't last long for you OP!

He usually goes to bed around 8 because if he went earlier he won't see his dad or his dad won't see him as he gets home for about 6/6:30 depending on traffic and leaves to go home to go to work around 6

Fair enough. You do what works for you as a family 😁

When young doesnt make a huge diff as still doing 12 hour routine

Obv when at pre school etx it’s diff

Tbh if he’s waking 830sn he’s doing similar routine just a later time so that daddy can see him which is nice

Yeah think we're gonna do routine you suggested, but like an hour later for the times. So his daddy can see him after work

If once he's asleep, he sleeps all night, I wouldn't try to make any changes tbh!

Mine didn't manage that until 2 and 3! Don't upset a very finely balanced apple cart. You have it exceptionally good at the moment, even with the frustrating bedtime.

Jurassiclover · 25/01/2022 14:50

I'd say your bedtime is about right then, at least for my DS it usually works out around 12 hours after waking so if my DS wakes around 8.30 then bedtime would be around 8.30pm, hopefully the routine PP suggested works for you!!
