Baby still not walking

Our baby is 16.5 months old and still not walking. He will gets around by crawling, will cruise along the furniture and take a few steps with a baby walker, but he doesn't show any interest in trying to walk by himself and will only stand unaided for a couple of seconds. He's our fourth baby and our others were walking by now. At what point would you consider it a concern?

Mine didn't take steps til 16 months. Walking 4/6 weeks later. I spoke to HV and she said not a concern until beyond 2. He's 2 now and he is literally running about, you'd have never known he was late to get going.

I’ve literally just been through this, Ds1 walked at 10 months, Ds2 (now 19 months) didn’t start walking until a week before being 18 months, I wondered continuously what was wrong with my broken baby…..a month later you’d have no idea

I was told 18 months was the top end of the normal range. Ds didn't walk till 18 months, he was already under children's physio for hypermobility. He was discharged after that, he's still very very bendy and didn't take a running step till gone 3. (First dc walked at 10 months)

My DD didn't walk until 16 months and I was made to feel like that was ridiculously late at baby groups but it isn't! Girls usually start quicker than boys I've found too, so even if your boy was on the same trajectory as my girl he probably wouldn't be walking for another month or two!

My second didn't walk until 18 months. He was a very fast crawler and simply couldn't be arsed. When he finally saw the point he was running within a couple of weeks.

If it’s any consolation, from an evolutionary point of view it’s actually beneficial to be a late walker. Less likely to get themselves hurt because they can’t move far away from mama. Look at it as a life saving trait that has been passed down the generations, quite amazing really.

My daughter was 17moand was already under a paediatric physio as she didn't roll until 9 or 10 mo.and couldn't sit unaided until 10mo. They said 18mo is top end of "normal" but the initial step would be a referral to a community paediatrician for development review and unless other concerns probably wouldn't do much more than exercises / activities to encourage it until closer to 2.

My daughter was 19months old! Her twin brother walked at 1, she didn’t even crawl until then (she was a bum shuffler)
She literally just got up and walked one day.
She is now almost 5, loves ballet, swimming, runs just as well as her brother 😁

If you have concerns I would contact your Gp for a paediatric referral. No harm in checking to put your mind at rest.

Mine walked at 16 and 21 months. No issues, just took their time. With DC2 the HV was keeping an eye on her but she was doing something new each time we spoke (progressed to standing, etc) that she wasn't worried and just let her take her time.

MsMiaWallace · 24/01/2022 08:28

Could have written this myself!
DS is just 19 months & not walking.
Amazing crawling & surfing around furniture.
He is very lazy. I was considering contacting HV.

I have twins. One was late to roll, sit, crawl and walked at 25 months. He had a global delay ( ie delayed in a few areas). Which later turned out to be a syndrome. it’s probably going to be fine but do talk to your gp.
