I don't really feel like going back to nappies is the best option as we have been training dd2 (2.3yr) since saturday and she has only had 1 accident but she is badly constipated, has been on lactulose for about a month and is now on movicol (been on this for 5 days) she did 1 massive ball of pooh on xmas day but nothing since now she is leaking a bit of pooh (marking her pants) i'm wiping everytime she goes for a wee.

What do I do now?

Maybe I was silly trying to potty train her when i knew she was suffering constipation I was hoping it would help with getting her to sit regularly on the potty/ loo dd1 was like this and i put off training her until eventually i had no choice because she was going to start school just after 4 she was trained by 3 and a half in the end potty training seemed to do the trick.

Was she doing a poo in her nappy then? If not then you may as well carry on with the training, it will have to come out sooner or later won't it. I think you will just confuse the issue if you put her back in nappies now.

juuule · 28/12/2007 21:28

Try her back in nappies. I'd sort the constipation out first. If she's leaking poo it sounds as though she might still be blocked up. You might need to keep up with the movicol until she's going regularly. See your gp for advice with this as constipation can be a real problem if it's not tackled quickly.
I wouldn't worry about doing without a nappy until this is cleared up.
My dd has been being treated for the past 4 years due to problems resulting from constipation.

I would see your GP pronto if she is having overflow

laundrylover · 28/12/2007 21:29

I agree with MrsF - never go back to nappies. Marked pants are not the end of the world and she'll do a poo sooner or later.

Does she often get constipated? I guess that you've tried dried prunes and syrup of figs already if she is on medicine?

Poor thing. Keep going with the pants and make a huge fuss when she does a poo so she knows you're pleased.

Good luck.

juuule · 28/12/2007 21:38

It's not the marked pants that's the problem. It's if she is deliberately holding, then it gets painful, then she holds....etc...lots of problems.

juuule · 28/12/2007 21:40

You really do want to avoid her developing encopresis
See your gp about the constipation until you are happy that it's passed.

Thanks for replys, after i posted here we went to mil's I was upset as I knew if she didn't pooh soon she would carry on with overflow and i'd feel I had to put her back in nappies which really would be a massive step backwards imo plus when this happened with dd1 i felt everyone thought i was just lazy for not training her early because they didnt understand about the overflow etc anyway at mil's she was happily playing (in pants) then as soon as our backs were turned she decided to go and help herself to the food on the dining table, dd1 said she heard dd2 crying so i ran in to see and i thought she had hurt herself by then she had already done a massive pooh in her pants so i cuddled her and took her up to the bathroom and put her on the loo (pooh fell on the floor, down her legs, the loo and the floor - god job my mil is supportive of the potty training, has only been on about it for the past year ) Anyway now that's out the overflow has stopped so we'll carry on with pants and medicine.

I don't really see how going back to the gp's will help as i've been there twice recently she only got the movicol on monday so feel we need to give it chance to work.

Think I just need reassurance that she will get over this and we will suceed with the potty training i really don't want to put her back in nappies as it won't be her that has failed by me doing that iyswim? I'm not one of these competitive mums but I really feel she is ready and if i go back to nappies now i'll be scared to potty train her until she is much older and i think that would be a mistake because she is doing really well apart from this.

Just re-read my last post and its a bit jumbled sorry!

Juule after reading your link I'm wondering maybe we should go back to the doctors on monday and ask about high mineral stuff along side the movicol to clear out the impacted pooh. Reading that has made me wonder if that is what dd1 had when she was little, she suffered with constipation from 12mths to 3 and half and it was hell for her, I really am trying to avoid it with dd2, she has a good diet lots of liquid i've been keeping her off banana's, yogurts and milk (she's never liked milk anyway so just has the odd cup here and there when we can persuade her) I'm wondering where I have gone wrong Dp says not to worry and that its not my fault but as her mum I feel responsible and like I should know better now especially with dd1 having suffered so badly for so long.

Keep on with the movicol on it's own -it is about the only thing that does the job without causing problems with bowel action. Did your doctor prescibe her a higher dose for a few days to clear everything and then a lower amount for maintaining things? That's usually how it's done and also make sure you mix it with enough water - if not you get sticky poo which is difficult for them to part with (TMI)

LoveMyGirls · 28/12/2007 22:24

No he just said 1 sachet per day she's only 2, do you think we could up it to 2 sachets a day for a couple of days?

OP posts:
jamila169 · 28/12/2007 22:30

It looks like not -but you possibly could divide the dose -it's very specific about it being 67.5 mls of water to mix it but it can be kept in the fridge for 24 hours made up - maybe you could add some fresh orange or apple juice to it to encourage things along as well (in addition to the proper amount of water so it still dissolves properly)

LoveMyGirls · 28/12/2007 22:33

I've been mixing it with weak squash so she drinks it or pure orange juice. Not measured it either just in a large juice bottle (like a sports bottle)

LMG - I don't reckon you've done anything wrong at all. As you may from experience, potty training is hard going, and it is rarely straightforward. Your dds diet sounds good so the impaction doesn't seem to be diet related.

Good luck.

LoveMyGirls · 28/12/2007 22:35

TMI

Have I weakened it too much is that why she is only poohing huge balls (like fist size) every 4 days?

OP posts:
juuule · 29/12/2007 12:03

I would go back and have a chat with the gp. The movicol is obviously working but the dosage might need changing slightly. I would get some more advice about using it from the gp. Hard balls every 4 days doesn't sound quite right but maybe it is for your dd.
Jamila has given some good info about Movicol.
You can't weaken it too much as the dose per day is the dose.

LoveMyGirls · 29/12/2007 20:06

Feeling abit happier today, dd2 has had another huge pooh today so at least thats 2 in 2 days maybe the movicol is working and I wasn't giving it chance.

Anyone know how long roughly I can expect dd2 to be on movicol, i've only got 5 sachets left and im wondering if i'm supposed to give half sachets at any point or go back to gp for more or what?

OP posts:
LoveMyGirls · 30/12/2007 19:52

Another massive pooh today its gone a bit looser now so think she's definatly been cleared out. Just wonderign how to get her back to normal now. Will go to gps with her tomorrow!

OP posts:
jamila169 · 31/12/2007 12:22

I'd expect her to be on the movicol for a while yet - 10-14 days loading dose to get things moving, then half as much for as long as needed is usual, Keeping her loose is the way to go, producing 'balls' of pooh isn't good, it's saying to me that her colon was getting lax and stretched (it's common in paraplegics and people with CP but the root cause is prolonged constipation for one reason or another). Keeping her loose with the movicol, fruit juices etc will let her colon recover to normal and that should be the end of it, but it'll take time, you'll get there

LoveMyGirls · 05/01/2008 09:05

The doctor said to take her off movicol and go back to lactulose but after 1 day off movicol she wasn't poohing again so I gave her a sachet, think i'll play it by ear and if she goes 1 day without a pooh i'll give her a sachet the next day? If i give it everyday she goes really mushy! (not good when shes in pants, i have resorted to putting her in pull ups when i can see she is trying for a pooh (can be trying for anything from an hour to a whole day so not practical to keep her in pants or sat on the potty the whole time) She is in pants majority of the time still though.

She does know when she wants to do it but i think she is finding it hard to know when its going to come out, i put vasaline on her yesterday to try and help her, thinking if she started it the vasaline would help the rest of it.

I guess in a couple of months she'll be back to normal and i'll wonder what I was worried about - I hope!
