Swollen Tonsils and Sleep Apnea

Hello All,

For about a year now, my sons has suffered from Sleep Apnea when he isn’t well, which isn’t often, (I just recently found out that this is what it’s called). First time he had it last year, it seemed to be a allergic reaction and it nasal spray was given and it disappeared went away.

He then had tonsillitis in September, he had a temperature and sore tonsils so was given a throat spray and nurofen and it seemed to be okay after a week.

He had covid about two weeks ago and he started snoring again at night and the sleep apnea came back. I rang the doctors and they prescribed him some saline drops. Whilst I was doing the drops, I saw that his tonsils were swollen. I took pictures and sent them to the doctors, and instead of an appointment to see him (annoyingly) they gave him a prescription of amoxicillin. He’s been having this since Friday. However, it doesn’t seem to be working as I don’t think it’s bacterial as he doesn’t have any other symptoms apart from swollen tonsils and sleep apnea.

I don’t know what to do. He suffered from bronchiolitis when he was younger being hospitalised numerous times and now this. I feel like I can’t catch a break Sad.

Anyone have any suggestions? Is it just post/covid and he’ll be okay soon?
Do I push to have his tonsils out?

Hello. Just wondered if you had an update on this as it’s like you’re describing my daughter!!

Hello,
he finally had his tonsils adenoids removed and grommets inserted after I rang the ENT receptionist to enquire whether he was allowed to fly and she told me he wasn’t an urgent referral and I argued that he was as he had sleep apnea. She apologised and said his notes were incorrect and booked his operation over the phone there and then!

he is a different child. He sleeps better, no apnea, sleeps through the night, is happier and put on 2 kg in two weeks!

keep pushing, best thing we ever did!

That’s amazing to hear, really pleased for you.
My daughter is 5 and only seems to have developed this problem when she has a virus so it come and goes. The gp just said she will start to grow out of it at 6. No really sure what to do!
