Vaping in Teenagers

Do any of your teenagers vape? DD13 was asking about cloud vapes as they can help you sleep. I looked them up & it’s melatonin, which we did consider getting for her, but of course it’s not regulated so I guess it would be easy to have too high a dose. DD was saying that she’s used ordinary vapes before. Obviously I’m not exactly thrilled about it but she got confrontational & said she was going to do it whether DH & I approved or not. She showed me a video of her smoking a cigarette. At least she was being open with me. Just wondering how to handle the situation. DD often says we’re too strict ( I don’t agree). Apparently there’s an older boy at her school who can get them anything they want. She’s been offered drugs but was sensible enough to refuse.

I thought this would be a popular thread

I'd not allow mine to vape, they know my stance on smoking. They might go ahead and do it anyway if they are daft enough, but I sure as hell wouldn't give any kind of permission to vape!

My sister actually bought her 13 year old a vape for Christmas and I'm still trying to get my head around that stupidity.

Where is she going at 13 that gives her access to vapes and cigarettes? Is it on the way home from school? At school? Friends house?

I’d figure out how she was accessing it and then try and limit it, like getting her busy with something else.

13 is very young to be doing things like this.

To add I would 100% not be okay with vaping, though I have a lung condition so they aren’t allowed spray deodorants in my Josie let alone vapes

CowboyJo · 23/01/2022 19:19

Nope. My kids are all far too young for vaping anyway but even as they get older I won't have it.

If your daughter wants something to help her sleep, best thing is to make sure she has a proper bedtime routine (put away electronics beforehand), or melatonin tablets.

The sleeping thing though in all honesty just sounds like shes trying to sweet talk you into letting her vape because it's "cool" to her

CurryLover55 · 23/01/2022 19:37

I agree CowboyJo. DD reckons she isn’t swayed by peer pressure but she is. PinkPlantCase I’m not sure of the location. The cigarette in the video I assume was given to her by the friend she was seeing this afternoon. DD is adopted & is going through a very tough time with her mental health so I think she’s doing stuff she knows is wrong as a sort of coping mechanism.

It is rife in secondary schools. I hear them talking about ' geek bars'. Apparently a lot of the independent newsagents sell them to y 9 and above. We have reported some but it doesn't stop. Several kids have been caught vaping in school toilets and excluded for a few days.
My dd is 13. I am sure she has tried it but I absolutely would not appove.

As for melatonin I use if myself. I bought it in the States but I am not sure I would give to dd. Psychologically as it isn't approved here but that does lack critical thought on my part. However I am not in your situation.

Some vapes contain nicotine which is highly addictive. Nonetheless they are not products for children.

Some good advice here about talking to kids about smoking and vaping
