Potty training next steps advice needed

Hello,

Seems loads of conflicting advice in this space so thought would ask mumsnet hive mindZ

So, 2 year old celebrated his birthday by suddenly doing 3 wees in his potty/toilet - and then taking the pot and pouring neatly down the loo!!!

I guess he learned the last bit at nursery.

It’s a little mini loo from Newby. It’s been around the house for months but until then he had only enjoyed pressing the flush and sitting on it occasionally with no real intent.

He repeated it this a.m with several wees, which he proudly escorted to the loo again.

This is great but may still be a fluke. So now I am not sure what to do next.

We hadn’t planned to officially train till summer as I was told it involves a lot of wandering around in the nude. For him obvs, not me!:)

So, should we start only using pull up pants in day now, so he has a chance to visit and wee?

Do I need to bring a potty or little toilet seat when we go out? Or just accept that this might be an at home hobby for a while?

What should I ask him when out and about to help him repeat beyond the house?

Is this fluke or should I build on it?

I never did nude potty training.
I did use pull ups and knew where all the public toilets were!

Thank you @dementedpixie. Do I just keep encouraging him to go when he wants?

I found that pull ups led to regression and it was best going straight to pants once we'd committed to it. They need to feel wet to get it.

As my ds was under 2 when we started we used pull ups and did gentle potty training and moved to pants when he could reliably let me know when he needed to go. I didn't encounter any regression

We used the “potty training in 3 days” method - the book is great. Its not a miracle worker but tells you everything you need to know and helps build the foundations for potty training quickly.

We tried it last weekend and our daughter can now go for a few hours without peeing and no daytime nappies. no accidents today at least

Don’t bother with pull ups they can be confusing. Get a car seat/buggy protector thing off Amazon- also If you don’t have carpet downstairs that’s good let him run around nude on bottom half with puppy pads and towels on the sofa .. I tried to avoid upstairs in my house at first as it’s carpeted. It’s scary at first going out, just take a toilet roll and multi surface wipes and you can wipe up any accidents that happen when out , definitely take a potty - could also sit them on a loo in public toilet but potty is a must incase can’t get there in time. Just make sure to take them to try for a wee or poo ever 20-30 minutes at first ( I used to bribe with YouTube on my phone to get them to sit on there long enough) I also did try to stay at home as much as we could for the first week or two or just quick outings.

We started at age 2 and had a few regressions but stuck with it and just took about 2/3 months now he’s really reliable. Honestly it’s so worth it sounds like your sons doing great already but don’t be disheartened by accidents it’s just part of the process x

Worried456776 · 22/01/2022 21:42

oh and if you have carpet down stairs just put puppy pads and towels down on the floor

dementedpixie · 22/01/2022 21:45

As you can see there are different methods and you use one that suits your circumstances. I never found pull ups a hindrance and ds was potty trained by age 2.

I never took a potty out with me and didn't leave them nude on the bottom either.

dementedpixie · 22/01/2022 21:46

And also didn't use towels and puppy pads

Worried456776 · 22/01/2022 21:57

@dementedpixie

Did yours never have an accident then ? I prefer not to have pissy carpets and sofas that’s all.

dementedpixie · 22/01/2022 21:59

But I was using pull ups so didn't need the puppy pads/towels. Once he was reliable at going to the toilet we went to pants

Thinkbiglittleone · 22/01/2022 22:00

We didn't use pull ups, they are nappies, the child needs to feel the wet and I think if they are already using the potty, why put them in nappies.

We used oh crap the book, that did the nude bit, but then if the child is initiating using the potty themselves a lot, encourage them to use the potty before going out and start with little walks then using the potty on their return,

Angliski · 22/01/2022 23:32

@Namechange466 @Thinkbiglittleone thanks for method names, I will buy these books. We do have wood floors downstairs but he has always used it in our room ( which is carpeted). So maybe I neee to take it down in the morning snd see if he is as enthusiastic downstairs!

Once they start choosing to use the pot, there's no going back, only forward to the loo.

Good for him, reward him and don't make a big thing out of it.

Angliski · 23/01/2022 07:25

Ok great, we shall get our plans in order and keep celebrating his potty use! Thank you all.
