Blowing out candles on cakes: would you?!

Putting this here rather than on COVID board because I think more of a general cross section might see it here. I hope that’s OK.

It’s my son’s birthday party tomorrow. Bowling. We’re taking a cake and I just thought, is blowing out of candles still frowned upon? I know it wasn’t something we did for a while, but there were no parties anyway.

Would you double take if your kid went to a party and the birthday boy blew on the cake? Would you even notice / care?! Am I overthinking?!

All the kids are in a class together anyway if that makes a difference.

My son has a birthday coming up and I plan to do cupcakes so there is no blowing on the cake bit but only in case other people care, not because I'm personally worried

truthfullylying · 23/01/2022 06:26

@HumbugWhale

We made an extra cup cake to put the candles on which was kept separate from the main cake if that helps - candles were blown out but nobody had to worry about germs on the cake they were going to eat plus birthday child gets an extra cup cake to themself!!
This is the best idea.

I know we all did it since time immemorial but spraying a cake with spit just before sharing is a bit grim if you think it through, covid or no covid.

We always clingfilm cake even pre covid.

I have been to a million kids parties and literally have never seen this pre covid
EnjoyingTheSilence · 23/01/2022 08:37

I think covid has highlighted what a gross thing blowing out candles on a cake is. Some people (especially young children) spit more when the blow. I don’t think we’ll ever go back to blowing out candles on a cake. Separate cupcake for candles that birthday gets to eat.

RamblinBoy · 23/01/2022 09:08

Since when was blowing air out your mouth spitting? Maybe a 2/3 year old but an older child/adult can breathe out without spitting.

The clingfilm probably has more toxins than breath...

I would laugh my socks of if I actually saw this in real life. I've heard about it on here. Never known anyone actually do it.
DaisyTheUnicorn · 23/01/2022 10:22

I was just thinking that too. Never in real life. I would seriously wonder what they were doing! Problem is a thread like this will attract those anxious around cake. Kids love blowing out the candles on their cake. Just let the one who is anxious around it decline their slice. All is good .

Letsallscreamatthesistene · 23/01/2022 12:23

@TraceyLacey

Stick the candles in an egg box/ grapefruit/ potato covered in foil.
MASSIVE eyeroll at this.
PeterPomegranate · 24/01/2022 11:10

@hopeishere

We got extra long candles from M&S.
I really don’t see how this would help unless the candles were 2m long?
Blondeshavemorefun · 25/01/2022 11:11

@Chely

Would happily eat the cake if candles are blown out just like before all this covid safe rubbish.
Ditto

Life has to go on

More so for kids to remember fun times

My dd will be 5 end of March

Her 3rd and 4th birthday party cancelled as lockdown both times

She will be having cake and candles and blow normally

She needs normality

Sgtmajormummy · 25/01/2022 11:24

I used clingfilm 10 years ago when DC developed a minor cold a few days before the birthday party.
Nobody wants a “smittled” slice of cake.

Thievesoil · 25/01/2022 11:25

Yes I would. Healthy kids need get germs!!!!

Toomuch2do · 25/01/2022 11:29

I did a separate cupcake for DS’ birthday candles. He was chuffed he got an extra cake!
