Baby's colic is breaking my heart

I have a 17-days-old little girl and as far as I can tell, she's having really bad colic. It's only been 3 days but it already feels like an eternity - seeing and hearing her suffer like this shatters my heart. The sound of that cry is horrible. It's like a shriek, or a cry for help, a sharp expression of pain. It doesn't just happen at night, it's basically after every feed she has. I'm breastfeeding and I'm wondering if she's allergic to something I'm eating maybe. I don't know how we can go for weeks like this! I really want to help her. We've tried the massages, and I'm giving her Infacol with every feed. Is it worth contacting the GP? Sorry I know this is very common but I cannot believe how horrible it is.

I have a 7 week old DC (3rd). All have had colic. They do grow out of it, but it’s hard. Sometimes a bit of baby massage helped, or carrying in a cloth baby wrap for short times. Good Luck.

If it's after every feed it sounds a bit more like reflux or silent reflux. Speak to HV. Colief is good if you can get baby to take it pre feed. Good luck ❤️

Your LO is still extremely young, hopefully they’ll grow out of it but if they don’t Pursue it with the doctor.

We had this for 6 months and weren’t listened to. Baby wouldn’t sleep longer than 40 minutes, drew knees to chest, screamed in pain when laid flat. We were prescribed infant gaviscon, didn’t work. Finally prescribed omeprazole and baby diagnosed with GERD. Absolute game changer. Also took baby off the breast onto anti reflux formula at 6 months, was so much more settled on it.

Definitely speak to the GP. They will be able to try a few things to see if something can help. Sounds like it could be reflux rather than colic.

Look after yourself, it can be really stressful seeing your baby in such distress Flowers

It sounds like reflux and/ or an intolerance. Definitely contact gp.

OP where are you based? If in England ask to be referred to your local infant feeding team, they can watch you feed and suggest ideas. Mine told me that my DD had silent reflux after seeing her reaction after a feed which really helped me when seeing the GP about it (when he tried to fob me off with a printout of the NHS web page about colic...)

Thank you everyone!

I'm in Scotland

Not sure if it's the same in Scotland but I'm sure there'll be something similar if not - could you ask your midwife? Otherwise the Breastfeeding Younger Babies and Beyond Facebook group is amazing- there would be Scottish members there who might be able to be more helpful than me!

Hv can help in Scotland although not prescribers. They have a set protocol to try infant gaviscon (likely constipate baby and exacerbate other symptoms) then omeprazole.
