My 7mo has been screaming for hours

He went down to sleep fine but an hour later woke screaming and hasn’t stopped no matter what we try. He’s not hot, no obvious injury. We’ve given calpol and he’s still screaming. We’ve tried all sorts of rocking, patting, holding him and walking round the house. He’s just screaming. He’s never been like this. I’m feeling a bit lost and worried.

This happened with DS2 once, Fortunately during the day, I called the GP who saw us straight away, couldn't find anything wrong but sent us to hospital as they agreed that he must be in pain/have something going on to keep screaming.

Turned out to be constipation, I was reassured I'd done the right thing by getting him seen. I would call 111 and get some advice. If you're worried I'd take him to a&e to be seen. You know your baby, trust your instincts. I hope he's better soon.

Check fingers and toes for hairs wrapped around them.

Is he teething?

Is he hungry?

Is he showing signs of stomach discomfort (wriggling, trying to get comfy?).

Are either of his ears hot, red, or have any discharge?

How are his poos and wees?

Might just be over tired. Babies are not smart when it comes to realising that the cure for over tiredness is to sleep.

Also check all his fingers and toes in case a hair has wrapped around one, it's easy to miss.

Tried on his tummy over your lap?
Rub his back at same time...
He should be looking downwards.

Ohtheaudacity · 22/01/2022 00:05

He could be teething. He’s not hungry. We are giving him a top to toe inspection now so will check his fingers and toes thank you.

Do you have a car?
Take him for a ride.
Keep calm and come back if no help.

What she doing with his legs? DS gets ramps so ram rod straight legs. I find massaging them works,

The only “thing” I can find is this sore bit on his finger where he’s been chewing on it. I’ve checked his mouth and can’t feel or see any teeth (he has none so far) so maybe it’s the first one coming through? Since it’s been 3 hours since he had calpol we’ve given nurofen to see if that helps.

Could be threadworms? DD1 had a reaction very like this when she caught them although she was a little older.

QuizzicalEyebrows · 22/01/2022 00:28

Could be ear ache which is why he's chomping on his finger due to the pain

Ohtheaudacity · 22/01/2022 00:46

I had a good sniff of both his ears and they smell ok! Not very scientific but the best I can do right now. Why oh why do these things always happen on the weekend when the GP surgeries are closed. I totally stripped him and changed his nappy, all the clothes he was wearing, his sleeping bag, everything. It could just be the nurofen but he seems a bit more settled. For now…
