Hi all,

So I’m a FTM and I was just wondering if you would find the below autistic traits?

  • can be fixated on wheels for around 10 mins
  • doesn’t really interact with his peers, nursery have said to us a lot of the time he will just walk over the other children or through things
  • doesn’t really say many words
  • can usually have a good understanding of things I.e. goes into the bathroom stands next to sink, rubs his hands together and will come out to point to his highchair when it’s dinner/breakfast/lunch time. But will sometimes ignore when we say to go grab his shoes

He can however, do the actions to nursery rhymes, build blocks, clap, wave and blow kisses, points at EVERYTHING! Eat with a spoon and fork, is fine in new environments, always looks round to us for reassurance in new places, always brings a toy to us to show, is aware if we have left the room and will look when someone leaves or enters, takes his top off and knows what to do with a shoe and sock.

I would just like to hear others thoughts.

He is also very sociable with adults and older kids!

He sounds fine op.

Wheels ARE fascinating at this age. Other kids less so. They play alongside rather than with peers at this age. It's also early on alee h front sl a few words is fine. Selective hearing is s skill hell keep practicing for at least 16 more years

18months is a bit young but I would keep an eye on the interaction with others.

He is sociable with adults and older children but peers his own age not so much. He will play alongside them but when nursery said that he walks over them or through things, it started to concern me slightly.

Two of my DC were a bit slow to verbalize. However, they must have been listening hard because when they finally did start talking, they spoke in grammatically correct sentences very quickly. I think your LO sounds like a thinker too.

Sounds entirely totally normal.

I work with autistic children and I wouldn't say I'd be concerned atall

LuckyWithMyLot · 21/01/2022 17:08

Sounds very similar to my son at that age. He wasn't obsessed with wheels but moreso with the entire car. He'd line his cars up a lot. Apparently this can be a normal phase (or "schema") and it's also very common for wheels to fascinate kids (more often boys).
DS is now 26 months and is very vocal and social. No autism concerns here. He started talking a lot more just before his 2nd birthday.

So you wouldn’t be concerned @cherrypie66

@LuckyWithMyLot thank you for reassurance. After seeing Nursery’s report today it made me worry slightly!
