Left window open

Hi,

First post so go easy on me!

The other night I stupidly left the window open in my sons room (when it was VERY cold outside) as it was too warm for him, I was planning on emptying the dishwasher and then going in and closing it and just completely forgot.

Anyway he wakes up at 2.30am crying (as he was probably cold!) with a horribly horse voice (like a croup sound) and now has a cold. Luckily it only reached 17 degrees in there according to the thermometer, but it felt freezing to me!

Was this just a very weird coincidence or do you think I caused this by leaving the window open when it was barely 1 degrees outside? I feel terrible that I might have caused it! I took him to the doctor for the croup symptoms, as his breathing was very loud, but was so embarrassed about leaving the window open all night when it was about 1 degrees outside that I didn’t say anything.

May sound silly to some but could do with some reassurance :(

How wide was the window open?
He was probably getting the draft tbh.

What did doc say he had?

It's done now, stop beating yourself up. You'll be double checking the window from now on even when it's shut Smile

You can't catch a cold from being cold!

Abra1d1 · 19/01/2022 20:26

17 degrees isn’t cold!

Coincidence. Colds are caused by viruses, not cold weather. It’s actually lot healthier to sleep with a window open in a cooler room and wear more layers. 17 degrees isn’t even hugely chilly - 16-20 degrees is optimal sleeping temperature so it was within that.

Excited101 · 19/01/2022 20:27

My house is never as warm as 17° unless I put the heating on which I don’t often do. He’ll be fine.

whyohwhyohwhyohwhywhy · 19/01/2022 20:28

It was 8 in our bedroom last week. The heating is bust

Foodie5 · 19/01/2022 20:29

He was definitely getting a draft! Not wide open, maybe about 1/2, blinds then about 3/4 open after that and then those Velcro blackout blinds half way across the window, so the draft was probably only coming through half the window, but the side that his cot is on :(

Doctor said most likely virtual infection, but he didn’t know about the window!

Thank you for the response. Definitely checking the window each night now, it’s annoying because I always check on him before I go to bed, but I fell asleep watching James Bond because that film is too long !!

It snows in our bedroom.. I kid you not. I have never had a cold... Ever.

Foodie5 · 19/01/2022 20:31

Thanks! Anxious first time mum as you can probably tell! I appreciate your responses :)

I really wouldn’t worry - your DS goes out in cold weather in the day and breathes the cold air presumably. I don’t think it’s much different to that.
What did the Dr say?

Foodie5 · 19/01/2022 20:33

@Santahasjoinedww 🤣🤣

Viruses cause colds. Not having a window open, or going out with wet hair etc......

Foodie5 · 19/01/2022 20:35

@GemmaRuby yes that he does…. ! I guess it’s just because it was a good 7-8 hours and was one hell of a coincidence that he sounded like darth vader when he woke up!

Doctor listed to his chest and said all was ok. If there was one thing I would change about being a mum it would be the constant worrying!

As above - viruses cause colds and actually having 'good ventilation' can help with reducing virus particles (as we all know from covid!). Also if it's croup, fresh, even cold, air can be helpful. So no, leaving the window open definitely did NOT cause him to unwell. It did probably cause him to wake at 2:30 as he might have been cold, but didn't cause the virus, no!

MyHusbandTheIdiot · 19/01/2022 20:40

17 degrees is the temperature I keep my kids’ rooms at for comfortable sleeping. There’s absolutely no way your son will have suffered in anyway secondary to his room being that temperature!

itsgettingweird · 19/01/2022 20:46

They are telling us to open windows due to covid - a virus!

It doesn't cause a cold getting cold. It can prevent infection to have ventilation when germs are about.

NavaniKholinRocks · 19/01/2022 20:47

Not me but a couple of my mum friends had babies who were susceptible to coughs/colds/croup and they were actually advised to take babies out into cold air to help with coughing fits. Doubt the doctors would have recommended something that could be harmful! As others have said, it’s viruses that cause colds not low temperatures/draughts. And mum guilt is the worst! Try and take it easy on yourself.

FloatyBoaty · 19/01/2022 20:58

You cannot catch a draft. Or get a draft. It’s not a thing.

Lightstoobright · 19/01/2022 21:08

I thought you were gonna say you were worried that he might have climbed out of the window, not that you were worried that he might catch a cold!

Foodie5 · 19/01/2022 21:48

@Lightstoobright well there is that too 😃 but he can’t climb out of his cot yet
