Toddler climbing out of cot

My 19 month old toddler has now discovered he can climb out of his cot.
We've now put a safety gate across his door, to stop him from leaving his room.

Is it time to move him to a toddler/cot bed?
Also he's uses sleeping bags - Does he now need proper bedding?
Any advice please

How is he climbing out? Some DC use furniture next to the cot to get a foothold, in which case you can buy some extra time by moving that furniture away.

However if he is just using the cot itself nothing else, then yes, time for a bed. A cotbed might be an option but if he can climb out of a cot he might be able to climb out of a cotbed in not too long.

If you are moving to a bed then I would stick with sleeping bags so it’s not too many changes at once and you avoid the kicked off duvet problem. Maybe swap to duvet in summer.

Yes, sides need to come off the cot or buy a lclimb and fall out of toddler bed. It isn't safe for him to be in a cot at night if can climb out of it as he is at risk of falling. Make sure the room is safe, attach furniture to the walls or take furniture out.

He could get hurt on one of his escape attempts so the sides of the cot need to go immediately. You can do the cot bed configuration, buy a single bed and use a guard, put the mattress on the floor - up to you really! And also since he’s now on the loose double check everything in his room is safe like furniture strapped, no loose cords etc. He can stay in a sleeping bag, you can get toddler ones with feet out, or you can use a duvet, again up to you. Personally I found the duvet transition easier in the summer as they don’t get cold if they kick it off. Then strap in and mentally prepare for a few nights of having to lead him back to bed over and over! Not having toys in there can reduce the temptation but not always. Good luck!

Please take the cot sides off straight away. The very first time my ds climbed out his cot he split the whole of his forehead open.

My husband has taken the side off this morning. The other side is against a wall. Now to toddler-proof his bed room 😵‍💫
