Pre school jabs

Hi, I really need some advice please. My son will be getting his pre school jabs soon and we don't know what to do. He is terrified of the Dr's and won't even walk down the road where it is, he throws himself on the ground and cries so hard he makes himself sick if we try and walk towards the surgery. We've tried everything as soon as he knows he's going anywhere near it it's just a total desperate attempt to escape forget trying to get him in the waiting room. It is impossible and I can't see a way through this. When he's this bad how can I put him though this? I'm just lost.

Have you spoken to the Dr or health visitor about this? Do you know what set it off?

purpleheart12 · 16/01/2022 20:40

I have spoken to them but they couldn't really offer any help. He has been in hospital in and out lots so I think he has bad associations with it. We've tried making it a positive experience and so have the Dr's but it's no good.

Id tell him about jabs a couple of days before and let him watch an episode of baby panda or something where they talk about getting jabs a few times. The drive him to docs so he doesn't know where he is going as walk is clearly familiar and give him a phone to watch. It has to be done. Sooner rather than later to reduce your stress.

Maybe you could explain the doctor's surgery is different from the hospital and that going the doctors help him not need to go the hospital [as much].

You could also offer a treat afterwards for being brave- a small chocolate or low intensity activity he enoys?

Ask if he can have his jabs somewhere else.

purpleheart12 · 16/01/2022 21:12

Thank you. Yes I will ask if we can have them elsewhere and also if it's possible to not have injections but spray's instead if we can do those things we might just get through it.

They are jabs, not sprays. The only spray is the nasal flu.

My DS is like this.
If we've had to go for anything, I give him my phone for YouTube, something to eat so we can get him into there without kicking off.
Once we go into the room, I tell them he's going to kick off so quickest and easiest way.

Ofc there's no easier way with jabs but I've found sitting him on my legs, facing me, hand on the back of his head into my chest so it's like a cuddle (not tight obv) and I make sure his head is facing the other way so he can't see what the nurse is doing, she does it. He cries then we're done.
