Shampoo in 8 month old eyes

Hey guys. Me and my wife were bathing my little 8 month old boy when I do what I always do and go to put shampoo on my hands to rub on his hair, where a little bit of neat baby shampoo flicked straight directly onto his eye. Obviously we immediately grabbed tissue and rinsed with cold water, then wiped around it. He was in pain clearly, as we all know the stinging sensation when that happens. Honestly, I feel like utter shit right now. Was a freak accident, but I just feel helpless and So guilty making my boy cry like that. He’s currently in my arms now drinking his milk slowly drifting off to sleep, so I’m hoping that’s a good sign otherwise if it was still stinging, I would surely know about it. Quickly lifted his eyelid and very slightly red but nothing drastic. Someone reassure me because I feel like dog shit right now. Just gave him a good kiss on the head telling him sorry 😢

Was it baby shampoo?

danni0509 · 15/01/2022 21:52

He'll be fine.

Danikm151 · 15/01/2022 21:54

He’ll be ok. It was an accident. As long as you rinsed it.

Just monitor the eye for a few days but if there was any damage he would still be hurt now.

Ah we’ve all been there! It’s a horrible feeling and like no other but he will have forgotten already.
I accidentally scratched DS on the face while trying to put a hat on him and drew blood - he was only about six months and I cried my eyes out. He cried for about thirty seconds then was fine.

He also managed to brush his arm against the edge of a hot baking tray while in the baby carrier - it had been put on the side and I hadn’t realised it was hot as the food had been removed or I would have kept him well away - and oh my god I thought I was going to DIE when I saw the little burn on his arm. I was on the phone to 111 in near hysterics. Again, he was absolutely fine (I’m still scarred though and he never came in the kitchen in the carrier again).

The feeling never goes but it does get more rational as they get older I promise but you have my absolute sympathy. Nobody tells you about this side of it beforehand!

I’m sure he’s absolutely fine. If his eye gets red or inflamed take him to the doctor to be sure but if it’s baby shampoo it will be fine.

Ahh I did this with detinox strong smelling cradle cap shampoo when mine was this age. She's now a healthy 2.5 yo who was sticking peas in her own eyes earlier declaring she was putting her contact lenses in.

There was a thread on here once about daft things we did as new mums, and one mum confessed to rubbing baby shampoo in her eyes before using it on her child to make sure it really was 'no more tears' GrinGrin

Don't worry yourself, your baby will be fine xx

That thread was hilarious. I vaguely remember another post about a baby who had fallen on the floor so the mum was hitting her head on the ground trying to mimic the sound the baby's head made to gauge how hard she hit it.

The baby is fine though, try to stop stressing.

@Tblock1800 absolutely fine! Nothing to worry about

Mummy1608 · 16/01/2022 08:36

How is your ds's eye this morning op? Xx
@youhadmeatjello thank you for your anecdotes, it's so reassuring to hear these things are normal...
That reminds me of when I first had to clip my dd's nails...she was born with long sharp nails so I had to clip them at 4 days old. I cut a huge (seemed huge, obviously wasn't) chunk of skin/flesh off her finger and I cried, panicked, tried to blame my husband, cried. My husband couldn't reassure me either as he was also in she's-so-tiny-and-fragile mode. So we just gazed at her in despair, I fed her and kept apologising, cried, etc.

She was totally fine. Lol

(I also considered pre-emptively getting medical assistance in case she got blood poisoning/sepsis. But there at least my dh stopped me lol)

@Tblock1800 thank goodness he's OK! You're not a shit dad at all... I actually read out your op to my dh (because it reminded me of all the mishaps my dd has been thru!) And he said "8 months? Is that the worst accident they've had in 8 months?" Hehe

Haha brilliant. Thank you. Yes, I think there’s been a few little things, but thankfully that’s the 1st time I have accidentally hurt him in 8 months lol so, that’s why I felt so bloody guilty. Thanks anyway 🥰
