Bed wetting (DS 6)

My DS has just turned 6 and had never had a dry night - his nappy was absolutely full every single morning. We just left it as he wasn’t really bothered by wearing a nappy but he’s started to ask about sleepovers and I don’t want him to be teased. So we decided to try and address it. Did a lot of reading on the ERIC website and that some children will never be dry if you leave them in nappies and you need to try without for at least a week.

So we decided to just go for it last night. Limited drinks after 6.30pm (an hour before bed). 2 wees before bed.

I went to check on him when we went to bed at 10.30 and he was already wet (hadn’t woken up so probably quite recent). I got him out of bed, got him and the bed sorted (luckily I have waterproof bed mats!) and settled myself in for what I thought would be a long night of bed changes … but he then stayed dry until morning! Amazing! I couldn’t believe it.

So now I’m not sure what I should do this evening - should I take him for a wee when we go to bed - maybe even slightly earlier tonight to see if he can stay dry? But the Eric website says that lifting isn’t really recommended as it doesn’t solve the long term problem.

It’s early days but I feel so positive already from the fact that he stayed dry from 10.30 until morning!

@Robostripes
If he goes to be at 7.30 I woukd go up and bring him to the toilet at half 9 and again when your going to bed if it's around 11.30.

But bear in mind my niece is 8 and still the same but she under a consultant now as her body is not making what it needs to slow down the kidneys at night time. Not saying your ds is the same but it could be for any reason.

Thanks @Babyghirl, I think I’ll try that this evening and see what happens.

My DH was a late bedwetter apparently so I do know that it might not be fixable, but worth giving it a go now and if we can’t crack it yet, no big deal.

I believe it is common (for boys, especially) to wet the bed for a long time.

DS (6) still wets it about 1 night in 4 on average and he has been out of nappies for over a year.

Hope you have better luck!

Well night 2 was a mixed bag. Got him up for a wee at 10, he was dry. He then wet at 3am (but not much) and then woke up wet at 6am - but with this morning he admitted that he had just woken up when he wee’d and “forgot” he wasn’t wearing a nappy. He also said (though I don’t know how true this is) that the same thing happened at 3 - he woke up because his covers had fallen off and forgot …

I did often have suspicions from how wet his nappies were first thing and that he didn’t ever seem to need to go to the toilet on waking that he was in fact doing a big wee in his nappy upon waking and that seems borne out by last night.

We’ll stick with it and hopefully within a week or so his brain will be retrained to remember he is no longer wearing a nappy …

6 is still quite young and not an age to worry yet, I'd say it sounds like you have potential there OP, keep at it!

To give some hope, OP, my son (also 6) was the same until last summer.
He asked to try an alarm, which was awful, so we stuck to lifting him every night. He had a sticker chart to record each night and he was proudly watching the dry periods increase. It took a while, but we forgot to lift him one night, and he has been fine ever since.

Thanks @PenelopeParallelogram that’s encouraging! We’ll stick with it and see how we get on.
