Best Formula For Sensitive Tummy - 4 Month old

I have a 4 month old baby girl and I have been solely breastfeeding until her sleep got bad at 3.5 months and she started to wake every 2 hours for a feed, so started to do the odd formula feed before bed to help her sleep a little longer. She has eczema so chose to use goats milk based formula from Kendamil as goats milk always helped my skin however found out today from the doctor that I need to try lactose free formula as goats milk is likely to be far too rich for a babies stomach.

She's been having awful stomach cramps which have been causing her to stiffen up, and her eczema has got worse, so the GP thinks its most likely the formula.

I have no idea what a good formula would be for a sensitive tummy. Does anyone have any recommendations?

I have cut dairy out my diet which has helped her eczema a little, so I'm really hoping the change of formula will sort her out.

What your gp has said about lactose free milk makes no sense as breastmilk is full of lactose.

Have the stomach cramps been since the formula?

It could be an issue with cows milk (or goats milk) protein rather than lactose and if it is then the gp should prescribe a suitable formula (not lactose free but free of dairy milk protein)

Thank you for your reply. I have since been back to GP and they have now prescribed a formula to try.

She has however picked up a nasty bug so I'm just purely breastfeeding at the moment. Will try formula when she is better.

Don’t go the goats milk route, you’re only going to create an issue in later life.
Can I ask where is the eczema and is it bad? Why is your GP saying it’s lactose intolerance? It’s a big statement and very often overused…

Tbh, if the formula is upsetting her and you can do it, stick to breastmilk. The formula won't help her to sleep if it's upsetting her tummy.

At 1 you can use dairy free milks.

I used a prescribed one called Nutramigen LGG. It was perfect for my lactose sensitive, eczema-y, sensitive stomach baby. Then he just grew out of some of his issues and at 5.5 months is able to accept normal formula. I think it is prescription so maybe ask the GP. And unfortunately it is very expensive - it was a necessity for us, he couldn’t take anything else we tried and I couldn’t breastfeed, but the price means I’m glad he’s now grown out of the sensitivity!

We tried Similac as friends recommended it. It tastes FOUL.

Oh - and good luck OP. We had a dreadful time with DS’ stomach, it was awful so I really feel your pain. He still has digestive troubles sometimes but it’s so much improved. Hang in there and all the best!

@Dramalam that’s what 2 GPS told me. My baby has a bit of eczema on his cheek and I was wondering if I should switch to goat and they both said a hard NO that it’ll just create issues . I wonder how big ops baby eczema ia

Bluemamma · 27/01/2022 18:26

Sorry pressed post too earl. So they both said that “lactose intolerance” is overused and that almost every baby have some type of eczema and that people are way too sensitive these days. They said couple of years ago no one even heard of milk intolerance or silent reflux. As long as baby is gaining weight and is happy it’s all fine - I’m only repeating, not a doctor myself obviously:)

I don't see how goat formula would cause issues later on. Its being produced by Kendamil and is approved for use in the UK, it wouldn't be sold otherwise.
