We just had a tea party in the house, close family, little cousins to play with.
Buffet, cake, balloons, toys out. He loved it.

I went to a proper party years ago for a friends LOs 1st birthday, entertainer, games, music etc. And the all the baby done was cry. It was too much.

Tbh they have no clue, don't remember it. So I would make it so it's more fun for them than you.

We did an open house.

We said for people to visit between 11-3pm or something like that. Did cake etc with grandparents before people came so it was cut and ready to go so people had a slice of cake and cup of tea when they arrived (or coffee, we don't discriminate). Put on snacks etc but didn't cost a lot and meant we were on our own turf.

People came and went within the timeframe and there was hardly any pressure on us which was a must.

Worked really well!

Yep I would say at home if you have the space, get some cakes and bubbles, balloons, that’s all it needs. At home means they can go for a nap if they get tired, people can pop in and out etc.

If you don’t have the space I would do the same sort of thing but in a pub function room or similar (probably not expensive to hire on an afternoon)

we hired some softplay mats and shapes from a bouncy castle company and had a few small kids over and their parents. it was a really lovely day with lots of nice memories for me and my husband, if not our daughter.

My first, a summer baby I hired a full size bouncy castle, invited 50.people, I did a bbq plus all the extras. Baby cried the entire day, it was way too overwhelming and busy. My second, visit from grandparents in the morning, a visit to a different big further away soft play, lunch out with grandparents and cake and some music at home with visitors popping by. She had the best day ever, and I actually enjoyed the day with her as there was no pressure to entertain and cater for people.

We had our dcs 1st bday in our home, just close family and our next door neighbours. (during Covid but when ‘rules’ were relaxed). Kind of open house affair like pps mentioned, Most guests arrived between 11/12 and stayed for 3/4 hours. It was a lovely warm sunny day , we had the double doors open into the garden, so most of us were sat outside. Playmats and toys outside for dd and younger kids, bubble machine. Good Spotify playlist playing low, simple buffet food, sandwiches, quiche, olives, crisps etc so not much work for us. I made the birthday cake the day before.

We did a jungle theme, balloons and garlands , it looked lovely. Most importantly, dd had a brilliant time, she spent the day toddling in and out of the garden, playing with balloons, dancing around with her young cousins and eating strawberries from the cake, plus getting lots of sneaky crisps from her auntys and uncles! She was happy and relaxed as was in her own home.
We did the same for her 2nd birthday and it was just as lovely.

We did a bouncy castle/soft play package at our local sports center. Our friends/family have children of all ages and it was great fun, i had mil take LO out for a drive an hour before so he had a good nap before the party whilst we got everything ready. He was happy the whole time beeing passed about and taken on the bouncy castles with diffrent family members and friends. We live in a small flat so a tea party was a no go
