Baby suddenly won't go down at night

Hey guys,

Just wondering if any of you went through similar and if you have any tips on how to deal with this?

Essentially DS is almost 6 months now, he was a brilliant sleeper until we hit the 4 month regression.

Now his new issue is he just won't seem to go down at bedtime without a huge fight.

So for context basically he has 3 naps a day, they vary in length but usually he'll have 2 hour + naps and 1 shorter 30/45 minute nap. Then he used to be fed to sleep in our bed, would sleep and usually sleep around 2/3 hours and then wake for a feed by which point I'd come to bed and Co-sleep/night feed for the rest of the night.

For the past few nights though he's either not going down at night until he's been awake for a stupidly long time (like 5+ hours) or he's falling asleep then waking up after only 30/45 minutes wide awake and won't go back to sleep for a good few hours.

He is teething at the moment so I know this could be impacting it but I just have no idea how to fix the issue and it's driving me mad spending hours trying to get him to sleep.

Any tips?

Thanks guys

Not much advice I can give I'm afraid. My DD2 has just hit the 4 month regression. Like you, baby slept well until now. Does you baby fall asleep feeding? I found the Elizabeth Pantley books quite useful. Eg. The pantley 'dance'.

All I can think is that it's a phase that we just have to plough through unfortunately. That's what I found with my first. Maybe that's why lack of responses here?

Anyway good luck (and good help us!) Thanks

It’s probably just a phase. If he was a
good sleeper before he will go back to being again.
When my DS refuses to fall asleep we take him
out in the car it works everytime. It’s not all the time just every so often he has a wee blip where he point blank fights going to sleep the car allways works in the end.

How much sleep is he having in 24 hours? (Adding up daytime and night time sleep)

What time is the last nap and bedtime?

Is the teething affecting him badly in the day or does he seem generally happy?

Also a note about regressions... it often means that they are going through a developmental stage and so I try to think of them as 'progressions' instead. Helps me to get through it if I know it's actually a positive thing. It is shit for us but as pp said, as long as they're getting enough sleep in a 24 hour period it's ok.

@CloneAViralMess thanks for replying, sorry to hear your DD is also going through this! He used to fall asleep feeding but this past week he's feeding for upwards of 45 minutes and seems almost like he's dozing off but then can't quite fall asleep. I'll look into those books thank you! Hopefully it is just a phase as you say! Thinking of it as a progression is a good idea though!

@santastolemycat yeah I'm hoping it is just a phase! (And hopefully a short one haha!) Ah we don't drive (and he hates his carseat anyways hahah). So far the only failsafe thing used to be feeding to sleep but now he's even struggling that way 😭 he will sleep in his pram after a long walk but we live in an upstairs flat and so he'd wake up as soon as I got home and had to carry him up the stairs, nightmare!

@Twodogsandababy before Xmas he was averaging around 12 hours total in a day. Recently with all these issues it's sometimes only 9 or 10. He doesn't have a set bedtime yet as I usually work on wake windows for him (as that worked previously) so his bedtime is anywhere between 6.30 and 9pm usually depending on when he wakes up/when his naps are/how long they last. But usually he'll take 3 naps, and on average his last nap would be say 4.30pm till 5pm and bedtime would then be 2.5 hours after he woke so 7.30pm. Teething sometimes does bother him in the day, but usually not too bad, we have had the odd day where he's been screaming during the day with his teeth but calpol works well for him (and it's not usually that bad)
