Weaning early?

50 replies

shauna79 · 12/01/2022 16:35

My son is 3.5 months and I started him on purées this morning. I've read up that 6 months is recommended, is that true?
My son loved what he had this morning so I feel bad taking it away from him now😣

What made you decide to wean him so young?

dementedpixie · 12/01/2022 16:37

Yes its a bit young
What was your reasoning for starting so early?

Twizbe · 12/01/2022 16:43

That's very young.

Before 17 weeks you really shouldn't be giving them anything other than milk.

I weaned early on medical advice at 4.5 months. Unless there is a medical issue you should wait until as close to 6 months as possible and when your baby is ready.

Have you had medical advice to wean him early?

Soubriquet · 12/01/2022 16:46

Why so young?

CardiganBlobby · 12/01/2022 16:47

Babies would ideally wean at 4 months at the earliest on medical advice as their tummies are still not very mature. No serious allergens like wheat/nuts/eggs etc should be introduced before 6 months. Fruit and veg purée only really from 4 months.

It would be best if you did some reading before going any further.

I never knew the recommendations were for 6 months. I just assumed milk for a few months and then when they seem ready food 🤷🏻‍♀️ he seems to be ready for it though

It's been 6 months for at least the last 17 years or so.

In what ways does he seem ready?

Nix32 · 12/01/2022 17:07

If you can ask on here, surely you could Google it too?

It is important and it something to research before actually doing.

@Nix32
I'm not a fan of Google

He can hold his head still and opens his mouth when I hold the spoon near his mouth

There are other search engines . . . Or libraries, or health visitors.

yikesanotherbooboo · 12/01/2022 17:22

DS is 20 and it had been 6 months for quite sometime before that.
Wait until h is 6 months unless your HV or paed are particularly keen to start him. One bonus will be no purées .

MajorCarolDanvers · 12/01/2022 17:24

Its recommended that they are ready for weaning when they can sit up, pick things up and put them in their mouths and that usually happens at about 6 months.

Early weaning is not recommended unless under medical supervision because it can cause lifelong digestive problems. At 3.5 months your baby's digestive tract and kidneys are not developed enough yet to process anything other than milk.

Your baby will open his mouth to anything including a spoon just now. It doesn't mean he is ready for food.

It really would be better to wait.

I like to get advice and opinions from people 😊

Their main source of calories for the first year is milk (breastmilk or formula). Weaning before 6 months isn't recommended due to research into their immature gut system and the risk of allergies.

First Steps Nutrition trust is a good evidence based source of information which you can trust.

NameChangeCity123 · 12/01/2022 17:26

We started at 4 months on advice and it's been no problem

shauna79 · 12/01/2022 17:26

They did say when he was born he had a kidney problem. Will feeding him early make it worse?

He can also drink from a glass of wine but it doesn’t mean he should.

BlueSky8 · 12/01/2022 17:28

I would wait unless medically told too.
He's 3.5 months he won't miss it in the morning or even remember it.

donkeyhottie · 12/01/2022 17:31

If you didn't know about the recommendation not to wean until 6 months, why did you put "early weaning" in your title?

shauna79 · 12/01/2022 17:33

@Fallagain
Well I wouldn't give him alcohol because that's bad for him.
I didn't know food this early would be bad for him. No need to be so mean. I've asked a group of mums for some advice.

There’s no question that 3.5 months is too young. Even in the 80s it was 4 months wasn’t it? My second was medically advised to weaned early due to reflux and even that was at 4 months, not 3 and a half. And tbh early weaning is a pain, there’s a long list of stuff they shouldn’t have until 6 months and everything has to be a spoon fed ultra smooth purée. Whereas wait to the advised 6 months and as long as you watch the salt and avoid honey you can throw anything at them. You seem pretty clueless, I’d call your HV and ask them to talk you through it rather than just experimenting.

shauna79 · 12/01/2022 17:35

@donkeyhottie
Because I read that the recommendation was 6 months.. so If that's the case then it's classed as early weaning surely?

Is this a real baby or a doll OP? And shouldn’t you be doing your homework?
