Yellow hole on DD's emerging tooth

Hi all

My 6yr old daughter's bottom tooth fell out when she was 4 as a result of a knock. It finally started growing late last year which came as a relief. However, recently as the emerging tooth has continued to grow it seems to have a yellow hole in it?? The next tooth over (which fell out naturally last year) also seems to be a bit cloudy white? She does not like sweets or cakes and literally only drinks water so I doubt it's diet related.

Has anyone experienced this? We have an appointment with the dentist in two weeks' time but the wait is making me go crazy with worry. Thanks x

It may be a red herring, but did she have chicken pox as a baby? DD (now 13) did, and she has patches of strange colour on her adult teeth. They are not holes as such, but a problem with the enamel.

It was a problem with certain viral illnesses, if you got them when your adult teeth were starting to be made - in our case she was 7 months old

I've been reassured that there are things they can do to fix the appearance later (early adult)

My sons teeth are the same but his was due to being ill with liver disease as a baby.
Did she have any viruses or other illnesses before her teeth came in?

My daughters bottom teeth are similar she also knocked the baby teeth out in an accident. The dentist said the damage is from the accident, she has a white filling over the damage.

Thanks, hmmm... she did actually have chickenpox when she was 2. We ended up in hospital due to complications with secondary bacterial infection from some of the pox, so it was quite a bad one. I initially thought the yellow was plaque but it felt like a little pit in the tooth when I tried to remove it.

If you don't mind me asking, what (if anything) did your daughter need done on her teeth for this? Hope it hasn't caused her any long term issues x

My DD fell when she was a toddler & bruised her lower gum badly but didn't knock her baby tooth out. When her adult tooth came through it quickly developed a yellow spot/dent. Dentist said it was damaged enamel likely from the fall years earlier (asked if she'd had an accident/trauma).

She's nearly 13 & will be having a brace fitted soon (for overcrowding) & they will deal will it cosmetically afterwards, possibly with a veneer.

It's annoyed her a bit over the years as sometimes people tell her she needs to clean her teeth more often but she just tells them its damaged enamel & that's the end of it.

Also, adult teeth are not as white as baby teeth - alarm that they look dirty next to the baby ones is very common but doesn’t necessarily indicate a problem.

Thanks - whilst she did have chickenpox as a toddler it's also coincidentally the same tooth she had knocked out prematurely.

If you don't mind me asking, when did your daughter get her filling done?

Discoloured teeth can be fixed with composite veneers, it’s basically a white filling painted over the tooth. DS has them as he has a mild case of enamel hypoplasia, we had to push dentist to refer for specialist treatment. Turns out, we could have it it done relatively cheaply privately although NHS covered DS.

Hairyfriend · 11/01/2022 19:49

A friend had similar across both her top teeth- more like a white line though. She was told it because her mother had an illness when pregnant with her, or possibly from her mother needing antibiotics at the time.

Hypo-plastic enamel, my son has it badly on his molars. Can be caused by antibiotics, chickenpox etc or can be genetic usually.

Thank you, at what age did he have the fillings done?

Thank you everyone for your comments. I've been stressing as I have not come across this before - I'm 7months pregnant so also blame the hormones Grin

Relieved it doesn't sound too serious and hopefully can be covered up with a filling before she becomes too conscious about it.

DD (now 13) did have to have 4 molars removed under a General Anaesthetic aged about 10.

The molars were badly damaged enamel-wise, but the dentist kept them in place (with fillings and sealant) until she turned 10, and the X-ray confirmed that the molars further back were developed enough to fit into place and close the gap once they were removed, without going lopsided.

On the plus point, with 1 less tooth now on each row/side, she will definitely have room for her wisdom teeth when they come through - so that is one future issue removed.

Her front teeth will need veneers at some point.

(We were the first poster to reply, and you asked what had happened since - sorry I didn't know how to "quote" a post that already had a "quote")

flippertyop · 12/01/2022 07:13

I have that still - always wondered what it was. It doesn't really bother me as it's a tooth you can't see very well but v interesting o

RMUM88 · 12/03/2022 16:40

In case it helps anyone the yellow "hole" was indeed an enamel defect caused from trauma to her baby tooth. The other tooth was just plaque which was removed at the appointment. Dentist didn't think it was a big issue and the defect can be filled and covered once she's older if it bothers her Smile

@RMUM88 it has been a while but how is the tooth looking now? My DS has a bottom tooth come through with an almost identical spot. I don't recall any trauma or illness as a baby and no antibiotics until he was much older. I'm a bit sad and nervous for the rest of the adult tooth to come through.

RMUM88 · 16/08/2024 12:38

If you look very closely it is pretty much the same but the spot was much more yellow when it was emerging than when the full tooth came out. Don’t worry, it really is hardly noticeable and being a bottom tooth it is well hidden too😀her dentist didn’t give the issue much importance and told her she can have it cosmetically fixed if she wants to when she is older.
