Red spots / rash on 4 week olds face

My 4 week old baby has a red rash/ spots all over his face. They look quite angry and painful. Does anyone know what this could be?

Could be baby acne, my DD had it although not as bad as that. It's hormonal and should go away by itself by a few weeks' time but you could check with the GP just to be sure? My DD's just disappeared eventually.

Most likely cause is baby acne which is normal and will go away by itself over a few weeks. It does look awful at the time.

Your health visitor or a pharmacist might be able to take a look and let you know if they think it is worth a GP visit.

All my children had baby acne around the same age, this is what it looked like. I just squirted a bit of boob milk on any sore looking bits, cleared up on its own in a couple of weeks or so.

Thanks for your replies! It just seems to be getting worse now than it was a couple of days ago, it’s also a bit on his neck and all over his scalp :( I am going to see the health visitor today so she can have a look!

Definitely looks like baby acne - HV can probably confirm that. My DS had it badly for a month or two.

Change123today · 12/01/2022 09:49

It does look the same as my baby - baby acne. It never seemed to bother her but did look angry & red - it cleared up and you would never have known!

Lockdownbear · 12/01/2022 09:55

Looks a bit like the "newborn baby rash" both my kids had but they were younger it appeared when they were a couple of days and worked its way down their bodies before going away. MW gave me the proper name for it too.
I think I'd speak with your HV.

BTW he's so cute 😍

Thank you all - seem a bit less worried now! It started when he was 2 weeks old but wasn’t bad at all, only a few spots on his forehead, the forehead spots seem to have disappeared now but like you said @Lockdownbear seems to be working it’s way down the body! Now going on to his neck.

His cheeks just seem really red, dry and angry! I thought it just be painful for him, hoping it will just go away. Did anyone put anything on it? I am formula feeding and not breast feeding.

Double check with your HV / GP.
But I was told to leave it alone. It looked sore but didn't seem to bother either of them.

Gorgeous bubs!!
Agree with others that it looks like baby acne but your safest bet is to do what you plan anyway and get it checked. As a general rule of thumb with a rash, as long as when you stretch the skin/put a glass over it, it should disappear. Baby acne is different though. So many things that worry us!! Good luck

My lo was born with this that started on face then all over body turned out to be a cow milk allergy.

sageandbasil · 12/01/2022 23:38

My DD had this. I used kokoso and Childs farm moisturiser. Breast milk didn't do anything but the moisturiser cleared it right up

Firstbaby1234 · 15/01/2022 11:35

It seems to be clearing a bit but his skin is going very dry now on his face.. I have been using Childs farm moisturiser on his body but didn’t want to put anything on his face but water incase it made it worse.

Coconut oil is gentle enough to use on newborns anywhere, including their face. My DD had baby acne which then went into dry skin and this sorted her skin out nicely.

ofwarren · 15/01/2022 11:38

Could possibly be eczema. You need to get a GP to have a look.
