Is it possible to change your baby's sleep patterns?

I have a 12 month old who normally has a 1.5 hr nap in the morning, followed by a late nap (30-60mins) at 5. He's then in bed by 7.30/ 8. In the last couple of days he's failed to settle for his 5pm nap and I wonder whether it's because he no longer needs it. If so, is it possible to encourage him to sleep for longer in the middle of the day?

If you cut out the 5pm nap he will probably start sleeping longer for the morning and/or go to bed 7ish. Usually you cut out the nap and put up with a wierd few days until the learn to cope without it and settle into a new routine. All my 4 have given up that 2nd nap by a year old.

Yes DD dropped her 2nd nap at about 10m. She gets up at 7ish, naps 3 hours later for anything up to 2 hours then stays up until 7ish at night.

Oh wow! 7pm to bed - I feel giddy with the excitement at having all that extra time to myself! Sad, isn't it? But I'll give it a go. Thanks, cargirl!

That is the "Norm" but as we all know by now they are anything but Normal little things DD has only just gone to bed. You would think she knows Santa is coming but she is only 15m I have a heap of things to do!
