i know the best thing is to leave him with his nappy off but he's so farking active i can't keep him on a towel and i don't fancy having shit and piss all over my carpets! what's the best ointment to use, i've been using Sudocrem and Tesco's own, and Tesco's own seems to be doing the best but it's all still red and raw and he's crying every time i put a nappy on him!

i'm having a real PFB moment here, so could someone please slap me round the face as well please? ta.

If you suspect thrush, a thin layer of Canestan applied before applying the barrier cream should clear it up. Cloth nappies should be soaked in a vinegar solution before washing to clear the thrush out of them.

Yes, sometimes thrush can look like bad nappy rash that just won't clear up usinf normal creams.
If it is thrush it will look like it is spreading out towards the tighs and not stay confined to the nappy area.
Try canestan.

I have never had any problems with metanium. The fact that it is so thick is its strong point. You don't need to wipe it off after a change, what sticks to the bottom, protects the bottom!!
You don't HAVE to use PJ, it just acts as a nice barrier, metanim is also a very good barrier.
Last year dd3 then 11 months had the most shocking runs for DAYS, she was pooing every 1/2 hour day and night and her bottom was bleeding as a lot of the skin had been burnt off by the acid poos.
Very kind and helpful people here suggested taking her off her bottle and giving her dill water to settle her stomach. This did eventually work.

Olive oil works as well, just put a little on and could also add a barrier cream as well. Am struggling to clear my little guys at the the moment.....we've tried sudocream, metanium and then olive oil and vasilene. It gets better for a day and then back to redness. Am gonna try the chamomile tea - hadn't heard of it but it's worth a try. And if this doesn't work then will try change of nappy brands.

katwith3wisemen · 27/12/2007 07:31

metanium is really effective. you only need the faintest smear, and yes it soes stick to everythinh inc carpets and clothes so take care/

Camomile is also excellnt as is barley in the bath water.

sorry bf atm in the dark so typing awful !

Hope it sbetter now UD, it was me who said metanium is bad but not so bad that I don't use it on ds4.

My friend in my RL post natal group is a sister of a pre/post surgery ward and they use metanium for the patients and it was her that told me it wasn't a good idea to use it 24/7. Potent stuff so use it very sparingly and never use it as a barrier cream to stop nappy rash strting, is on skin that hasn't got nappy rash.

I only use it of sudocrem hasn't worked now....
