3 month old crying during burping and after bottle (Not colic or wind!)

Hiya so my DD is 13 weeks today. She has 6oz bottles atm and we're having an issue where she starts crying if we take the bottle out her mouth mid feed to burp her or when the bottle is done. She has been only bottle fed due to tongue tie and me being hospitalised shortly after giving birth.

After 2 or 3oz we try to burp her, she scks our shoulders while we burp her, then burps and starts crying till you let her carry on feeding. After bottle crying we know she isn't hungry because she either starts messing around with the bottle or throws up a bit because I'm assuming she's drank too much... she hates dummies also so could the sucking on the bottle potentially be a comfort?

I'm obviously grateful She loves her food but its hard seeing her in distress! Does anyone have any tips or advice? TIA x

Is this on infant formula? Have you considered changing the brand?

How long has your baby been doing this for?

I know you said it's not wind, but... if it was my baby I'd say it's almost certainly wind/trapped gas of some sort... The bottle sucking and fussiness would be due to the discomfort.

I've had two babies (youngest is almost 4 months old) and they behaved/behave as you describe when there's a 'hidden burp' that needs to be found!

Having said that, the other thing that springs to mind is reflux, which can cause babies to be unsettled during and after feeds.

Yes we moved from aptamil to kendamil organic because of constipation when she was around 6 weeks. This crying has only started this last week or so!

I have wondered if perhaps it's a hidden burp or reflux because she's fine the rest of the time for example once bottle is finished she will burp and cry, then after some cuddles she's smiling and laughing again!

What would you recommend for reflux?

Hi OP, my DS is 17 weeks and does the same thing. He’s been doing it since he was about 8 weeks. I thought it was wind as well but I could spend ages burping him and nothing comes sometimes. Or he’ll burp and still do it. I’m pretty sure it’s not reflux or silent reflux.

I’ve just put it down to how he is as a baby. I think he gets frustrated if I take the bottle out because he’s so hungry and just wants his full feed. I did however notice improvement when we upgraded his teat flow - have you done this yet?

I would definitely consider investigating further to rule out reflux and wind! Good luck Smile

Forgot to add - the reason I’m thinking it’s not reflux or wind for DS is because he is absolutely fine during his night feeds when he’s sleepy. I can take the bottle out and burp him mid feed and he’s fine. It only happens occasionally when he is alert and active during the day and very hungry!

I stopped burping mine mid bottle at about that stage because they were just hungry and wanted the whole thing.

Hey, so I've tested just now on her feed and I think I'm with you.. its just her personality lol. She did not take her eyes off the bottle till I put it in her mouth again.

We've got a mix of 1 and 2 teats so will definitely finish changing over to 2, sometimes she drinks well from then other times we have dramatic coughing and spluttering.

They really are so cheeky! Hopefully she grows out of it but it is a relief I guess that they enjoy eating rather than the opposite! Thanks for sharing x

My 3 month old is exactly the same, he hates being burped 🤣 We pop a dummy in and it sorts him out but if yours won’t take a dummy then I don’t know what to suggest!
