We've been potty traing for a few days, dd2 is doing very well apart from she isn't poohing (last pooh was friday, 2 tiny hard balls) she has been suffering constipation and has been on lactulose for the past couple of weeks plus all bran/ bran flakes/ fruit/ juice etc I'm taking her back to the docs but that means leaving the house with no nappies........

Any words of advice, encouragement, support?

I think bran can dehydrate them and make constipation worse as it absorbs fluid in the gut? Have I made that up? Possibly...

pears prunes and peaches are all good for constipation, plus in our house the vinegary sort of beetroot is very popular and causes a fast and furious clean out of the entire digestive system

Will she poo if you put a nappy on? Sorry to harp on the constipation thing but this can cause real problems mentally and physically as I am sure you know. When ds stopped wearing nappies all was fine except he was scared to poo, and it was nasty for a while until we discovered he would poo in a nappy.

FrannyandZooey · 24/12/2007 09:56

a quick google shows nothing wrong with bran except in younger children it may interfere with mineral absorption

I don't know where I got the dehydration thing from, sorry

She's been having nappy on for bed and nap so could have done it in nappy if she had needed to.

I've been rewarded potty trys with grapes and raisens as well as sweets.

We did try prune juice but dp accidentily gave her the whole 1 litre bottle while i was out so she was very sick think thats put her off prunes.....!

Glad to hear it's going well, LMG

Advice is as the others, plenty of spare clothes, plastic bags.

And don't forget spare shoes/trainers, in case they get wet.

Good luck

Have to do it over christmas really, i wanted to do it when I only had 1 to concentrate on, normally I childmind so I have more than 1 under 5 so thought i'd do it when i only had dd plus she's been ready-ish for a while and I wanted to wait until I was sure she was ready and do it once.

Nappies at this stage would confuse her...

LoveMyGirls · 24/12/2007 12:46

We did it!! She had a wee at 10.15 before we left then waited until we got to mil's at about 11.45!
