Just wondered what time 4 year old does for fun to see if I can add anything etc. also opinions welcome to my info below. He's almost 4, willl be 4 at March. He's a boy also in case that wasn't obvious lol

Mornings nursery. Come home and enjoys hot wheel cars, just going around the house making the cars drive etc

Building duplo stuff

Singing lots

Helping me with housework (his choice)

Some drawing/mark making

He doesn't like dressing up.

He's a bit speech delayed so can't always tell me what he's interested in hence this thread

He loves being outdoors too so trips to park and walking etc or scooting around

Magna tiles or similar are great. My Ds can play with them for hours.

My 4 year old loves his marble run. He will also play a few board games. The Orchard toy ones are great.

I work with 4 year olds and these are one of our most popular toys: www.amazon.co.uk/Galore-Builders-Connectors-Connecta-Straws/dp/B01G8YCFQS/ref=mp_s_a_1_13?s=kids&crid=258DU9BOL9UUW&keywords=construction+straws&sprefix=construction+straw%2Ctoys%2C187&tag=mumsnetforu03-21&qid=1641669817&sr=1-13

I bought them for my 4 year old niece for Christmas and they were a big hit. You’d be surprised how many things they can make with them, and they’re quite easy to use so not much adult help needed.

Kinetic sand.
Play doh
Barbies
Playing at hospitals or cafes
Drawing and painting

Sausagesausagesausage · 08/01/2022 20:55

Cars (we've got a completely random selection of sorts), car mat and garage
Magnet tiles
Obstacle courses
Jumping on the bed
Pretend play - doctors, fire fighters and bizarrely "going to work" are his favourite
Baking
Anything crafty - junk modelling, stickers, painting
Reading
Practicing his letters
Collecting things outside - he takes his binoculars and a bag and picks up interesting leaves, stones etc. Sometimes we make pictures with them at home, sometimes I chuck them in the bin

I have a 4 year old, he absolutely loves Imaginext superhero toys and sets, such as the batman toys.

babiesof2022 · 09/01/2022 10:24

My little boy loves his toy story toys but he's not hugely into imaginative play although he does feed me pretend toast and tea lol

So getting figures etc like playmobile or peppa pig etc that he likes would just be a waste. He likes peppa so we got him the castle last year with figures to play with in the castle but he wasn't really bothered by it

I reckon something like kinetic sand or play doh would be a good option, as it's not huge outlay, not too role-play based and good for rainy days - plus they're good for fine motor skills, which is definitely a useful thing to work on before he starts school.

babiesof2022 · 09/01/2022 13:15

What is kinetic sand actually? And what would he do with it? I'm a total novice

Little girl, 4 in march. She loves Playmobil, reading, absolutely loves anything to do with maths!
She hates dressing up, messy play and also anything to do with dolls yet loves small world play.
She likes drawing and being outside too, if I let her out onto the front garden she would happily play for an hour just running around haha.

SarahWoodruff · 10/01/2022 12:32

@babiesof2022 it's slightly coated sand that you can mould. Usually comes with some tools e.g. scooping spoon, plastic slicer, a couple of basic moulds. Or you can use biscuit cutters or play dough tools. It's a bit messy so you need some sort of large tray to contain it. It sounds a bit weird but during the various lockdowns it was a lifesaver here as DD happily played for quite a long time with minimal supervision/ involvement from me. Might be worth looking at a YouTube video to see what I mean.
