What age can mixed sex siblings reasonably share a room until?

Views wanted please ! Ours share (they are small). We’re considering next house move and DH thinks they can share until secondary school but I think a bit earlier might be better to have own space. I know ncpcc recommends 10 but doesn’t really give any reasoning.
Any MNers whose shared later than this and it was fine ?
We’re central London and will really affect where we can afford to move to.
Thoughts very welcome!

If you can afford too, earlier the better in my opinion. But also ok til secondary school age.

I think 8 years old would be a reasonable cut off. I started showing signs of puberty at 9 and that's not really uncommon. I'm not sure how it is for boys at that age but I think it's a good idea for girls to have a comfortable private space to themselves as puberty kicks in.

The earlier the better within what you can manage. At some point someone is going to get body conscious or start wanting privacy. Everyone reaches this point at different ages, some girls want privacy at 6-7yrs, some 12 year old girls don't care.

Ideally you want to be in a position to separate them as soon as someone starts becoming uncomfortable (or before).

Thanks - that’s kind of along the lines of what I was thinking tbh

We are in the same position and are moving next year when the elder is 5. They will continue to share and the other room will be a playroom but I want to be able to swap them as soon as I see they need it.

Any age, I'm in council housing and children are entitled to their own rooms from 10 if opposite sex but just because they are entitled doesn't mean you will get it, waiting lists are years long so children can end up sharing well into their teenage years, I knew a family of 5 in a one bed flat, oldest girl was the a teen, then mum and dad and 2 primary age kids boy and girl, I always wondered how they managed, and that was private rent

DD 11 and DS 8 still share a room because we've only got two bedrooms. There's no major trouble or disputes, but they certainly wouldn't still be sharing if we had another option.

Unless we move (unlikely), DH and I will probably have to move to the sofa bed in the sitting room in around 18 months to give DD some space and privacy.

Might make a difference if your girl or boy is older (obviously if they’re twins it’s not relevant). Boys typically start puberty later than girls do if you have an older boy, up until secondary will probably be fine. But your girl could have started her periods before then and be uncomfortable dealing with that while sharing a room with her brother.

I’d say about 9/10 it becomes an issue. My 10-yr-old often shares with opposite sex cousin but that’s a few sleepovers here and there, and they both choose to give the other privacy when changing, change in the bathroom etc. Totally fine on holidays but not long term.
