Advice re cot mattress for second baby

I'm due my second baby soon and was wondering if I need to buy a new mattress for our next to me crib and Moses basket or would dry cleaning the mattresses for both cots be sufficient? I don't want to spend unnecessarily but equally want to follow SIDs guidelines and keep the baby as safe as possible.
Also, I'm going to try and use the sling a lot more this time even just around the house to get the baby to sleep and have my hands free. Does anyone know if the baby bjorn miracle carrier is safe to use indoors (it's quite thick) or is it ideally just for outdoor us? Thanks so much Smile

This thread is quite old now so some of the suggestions may be out of date, but if you’ve landed here looking for cot mattress recommendations, we’ve recently updated our best cot mattress page with lots of great options, as tried and tested by Mumsnet users. We hope you find it useful.

I reused the mattress dd had for ds
There's more sids risk if using a mattress from outside the family and less risk if using for a sibling.

The mattress was in good condition and had a removable washable cover and a washable waterproof surface underneath

I kept my DD's mattress for my DS. There was 18 months between them and i just made sure I cleaned it and kept it clean

I've never understood the new mattress thing when you go to hospital and they have the babies in incubators and cots that other babies have been in ( I assume they jusy clean them rathar than buying new mattresses constantly)

Thanks both. I will probably do the same.

I’ve always found the SIDS mattress advice very confusing. I presume it actually means you should check your mattress doesn’t sag & is still firm and safe for baby! Why on earth would a mattress from another family lead to cot death so long as it was in decent condition?! You can’t die from someone else’s smell.. Confused I can’t help wonder if this data comes from mattresses passed down to use by multiple babies and that’s deteriorated. Perhaps passed from a smoker to a non smoker.

We reused almost everything for DD2. There was a 3 year gap. Everything was in excellent condition. The next to me & crib had only been used for 6 months. We did get a new cotbed mattress as DD1 had been sleeping on it for 3.5 years (cot & bed). I felt DD2 deserved a new one & it’ll see her through until she moves to a normal single bed.

I'm just saying there has been some limited research showing that the risk is increased from a mattress from another family. They don't know why there is a difference. If its in good condition I'd use it.

We used the same Moses & next2me mattress - both were v lightly used by DC1 who didn't like either, washed & cleaned and put in storage. I brought a new cot mattress because it had already done 2.5years and a replacement wasn't that expensive.

For slings: don’t get a baby Bjorn! Google your local sling library, go and try out lots and get one that suits you.
