DS is very reluctant about all things toilet related but yesterday was happy to wear pants and went all day out and about finally asking to use the potty when we got home at 5pm. He used it successfully and was well rewarded. He later did a pooh in the pants which he denied and resisted getting changed. This morning he was reluctant to wear pants and asked for a nappy, I told him he wouldn't be able to get any more prizes if he didn't wear pants and he agreed to wear them and so far so good. So do we go for it or leave a while longer as he is still resistant and do we keep up the big bribes and for how long eg yesterday because we were out he got loads of verbal praise for trying to use toilets and staying dry and then a big prize out of the box when he did the wees on the pot when we got home. The poohs we just handled casually as if they had been poohs in the nappy. Advice please, he is 3.3.

he's done really well if you went out on his first day of toilet training and he went on the toilet while you were out! I stayed in for the first 3 days of dd's toilet training iirc and it was only after a successful couple of days with potty alongside that I dared to venture outside!

My DS is also 3.3. We were potty training for the last few months but getting nowhere. He could stay dry for a while indoors but didn't seem to get any warning. We had a deadline as he starts nursery after christmas, so it was all getting a bit stressful. He was crying because he didn't like the potty or toilet. Anyway, we've given up for a while, giving him a break, i've changed his nursery to one that will take him in nappies, and i guess i'll try again with him after christmas. Not looking forward to it though.

Thanks for replies so do we go for it, normally we wouldn't have dreamed of taking him out so early on in the piece but he has chosen just on Christmas and it is near on impossible to stay at home at the moment due to so much going on!!! He still seems quite reluctant so Im not sure whether to let him sort of go back and forth between undies and naps as he wants or to say right this is it, you can do it and force it when he does resist iykwim??!!

sorry had gone to bed by the time you replied! I think once you decide to go for it you have to stick to it. If you keep putting him back in nappies you will confuse him. If you are very busy atm maybe you should wait till after xmas when a bit quieter? Start when you have a quiet day not going anywhere and keep potty close by. Once you have a successful couple of days you can start going out again and I would take potty with you! HTH

Hello there,
I think when is cold, it's more difficult to stay dry. My DD2, 3 in January, had been potty trained last summer. She was dry within 3 days, and even at night, the nappies would be dry. This was all in Spain. When we come back to the Uk, night nappies are always full, and for the last 5 to 6 weeks, she has been having accidents, with the wee. I think the cold weather is a factor with the accidents, but I still make a fuss when she has one.
One advice is, once you start with potty training, don't use nappies during the day, just at night. It might be difficult, and even when they have been clean and dry for weeks, you always have to expect some accidents.
