We literally just walked in the door and it happened again . Should I call back as I know nhs are very busy but don't know If it can wait to see G.P . My ds is fine within himself just having alot more diarrhea it smell like fish muccusy and traces of blood. Its not dairy intolerance as he has this and has no dairy .

How old is he? I've heard this is fairly common in very young babies/newborns. X

Definitely call back and ask for a further review by a Dr. My DS has this at about 5w old and it did turn out to be CMPA but there were other things that they ruled out before arriving at that diagnosis. I don’t want to alarm you and I’m only going by what I was told when we were in hospital, but as I understand it, some of the other potential things can be serious and we were admitted into the children’s ward for observations while a treatment plan was decided upon. Good luck

He is 9 months old . I called back nhs 24 as doctors is closed today so they checked his ears throat and took his temperature and oxygen felt his stomach and said it was soft so was ok but didn't actually check his bottom s . They said that it is probably an infection or an anal fissure and sent me on my way so I'm not sure wether to have my mind at ease or give in to my anxiety and take him to G.P tomorrow.

This happened to my DD when she was probably a month old, the poo was solid though so that made sense it was a tear. Can you see any visible tear?
I'd ring back though due to the combination of diarrhoea and blood.

Kazzax4 · 04/01/2022 23:49

I cant see any visible tear . He hasn't had any constipation since he was 6 months old so lucky that way . Yeah I think I will call tomorrow and speak to G.P better safe than sorry especially as its diarrhea and smells so bad . Thankyou x

I would not be happy with that answer if he is having diarrhea and not constipated.. Is it just the twice this has happened?

Kazzax4 · 04/01/2022 23:59

Yes just the twice he has blood in his poo but has had diarrhea for 3 days now .

Did they even take a stool sample from him to send off to be tested?

PGSTesting123 · 05/01/2022 00:03

Mucus should be a red flag - ask to see a paediatrician, there must be one at the hospital

Kazzax4 · 05/01/2022 00:03

Nope no stool sample that's why I'm not very happy with just being told this and getting sent away . Definitely going back to G.P I think

That poo looks like it has a lot of mucus in it. Has he definitely not had any dairy recently by mistake? A change of ingredients or him getting hold of something. My DD had CMPE and I had to watch her like a hawk at places like playgroups because if another child dropped a biscuit she'd pick it up and eat it.

I think it's a good idea to phone for a GP consultation tomorrow. If he's ok in himself then I wouldn't go back to A&E but I would want to discuss possible causes with my GP.

Kazzax4 · 05/01/2022 00:31

My first thought was dairy as his poo used to look similar to this when he was younger before he was dairy free . He definitely hasn't had any dairy or changes of ingredients I was raking my brain and my food for ingredients to make sure lol he has had a bad cold so we haven't been anywhere lately and he is only enjoying soups and plain foods at the minute so it's easy to keep track whats in them when I make them. Yeah thats why I didn't call nhs back today as he has been okay within in himself was even to hyper for his bed time tonight lol I think n he is teething ( he still has no teeth ). Will get to the bottom of it tomorrow with G.P .. thanks all so much Smile

Have you recently introduced soy or any related products like tofu or edamame? Some babies with CMPA can also have similar reactions to soy.

With that amount of blood, I’d definitely be seeing someone again. Not going to A&E, but definitely pushing for answers.

Good luck!

Kazzax4 · 05/01/2022 09:19

Ds is usually OK with soya but will keep an eye out for that. He has black bits in his poo now too don't know wether that is normal or not . Still waiting to get through to reception for G.P hopefully I can see kne today as receptionist isn't very friendly shall we say lol

Black bits in poo isn't normal and can suggest blood from higher up in the digestive tract. Needs a GP appointment today

Notthissticky · 05/01/2022 09:27

As others have said, I would not be happy with those answers. Go back to your GP and suggest/ insist they take a stool sample for analysis. Tell them bloody diarrhoea isn't normal (they know this, but it clearly isn't spurring them into action, so remind them) and you're worried he'll deteriorate suddenly (I would be). If they say it's an infection, ask for more details (where/ type/ cause etc) and how they propose to treat it. I wouldn't be happy leaving an infection that causes bloody diarrhoea untreated at all!

Maybe it's harmless, but if it is you want a plausible explanation as to why. Trust your instinct (you don't sound satisfied with the treatment and explanations you've been given so far), you know if something's up with your baby. Good luck!

Notthissticky · 05/01/2022 09:30

Re: fish smell - that sounds odd too. Is it definitely his poo that smells fishy, not his pee? Has he eaten any fish in the past few days? Just asking as DS1's pee used to always smell fishy if he'd had fish fingers the day before and it took me a while to make the connection!

Kazzax4 · 05/01/2022 12:20

Called G.P they are really busy and calling between 2.30 -3.30pm so will asked to have ds properly checked . Yeah im not satisfied at all so will be getting answers today will just need to be pushy ! . The black bits in his poo has worried me to I don't know why they don't take it more seriously maybe I'm just an over anxious mum lol. Will ask for stool sample to be taken . I'm worried Incase he becomes dehydrated as he has had this for 3 days and I'm finding it hard to get ds to drink fluids even tried a syringe. Yeah it's definitely his poo that smells fishy his pee is little more yellow and stronger smelling but not fishy . Hasn't had fish for a week .
