4 week old raising head right up when on tummy

Definitely not trying to claim I have an advanced baby here - just interested in other’s experiences. DS1 always hated tummy time, head control took quite a while and other physical milestones like crawling also came later rather than earlier.
DS2 (4 weeks tomorrow) seems really keen on tummy time thus far and this evening actually very briefly pushed up on arms and lifted his head right up. Motion caused him to overbalance and he ‘rolled’ onto his back.

Wasn’t expecting anything like this until several weeks/months down the line. Is this unusual or am I just thinking of DS1 and his timetable while some babies do stuff like this really early?

Thanks!

Totally normal! My DS did similar around the same age when on his play mat, it's just an accidental roll, they do it a fair bit at first when they're still floppy/wobbly

Thanks. I was amazed he could lift his head right up - I guess every baby is different.

DS1 could lift his own head from birth. But he was 15 days late.

My second did this at 5 weeks. He was thenrolling properly, as in he was firmly in control of it as opposed to overbalancing because of his massive his head, by 7 weeks. It was a bit of pain tbh because as soon as they roll you’ve got to unswaddle them and he had a strong startle reflex. He crawled around 6 months, and has just started walking now at 11 months which is actually later than my eldest who didn’t roll until 4 months and never crawled.

DS2 was 2 weeks early and is average size. We are swaddling him at night at the moment so I’ll have to keep a close eye on this.

Both my DS's could lift their heads pretty much from birth, and youngest DS has already rolled over, he's only 12 days, so I think that was a 1 off fluke!

My baby was like this in very early days, he could also roll from his back on to his side but he seemed to lose this ability after the first couple weeks (thankfully!).

DD could lift her head from birth, I'm currently pregnant with DC2 and my mum has been reminding me that I must remember to support baby's head when they arrive because DD didn't really need the support so she thinks I've trained myself out of the instinct! Interesting that both yours could do it @TheLovleyChebbyMcGee.

I do think it's flipping incredible that they gain so much strength so quickly when you think about how long they were all curled up and floating in an anti-gravitational squishy waterbed Smile

My dd was like this from birth! We have pictures and videos where she is lying on my husband and lifting her head up to peer over his shoulder.
She only liked tummy time when it was on us though, hated it in the floor.

Ds lifted his head from birth and roll from front to back from 3 weeks. Pulled himself to stand at 6 months, walked at 9. He was never interested in staying still!

One of mine was like that. Physically very strong and was walking at 9 months (crawling at 5 months but with no steering!) it was a bit crazy.
