Etiquette on thank you cards for Xmas gifts?

DD is 2. We usually send a homemade crafty card to GPs etc for birthday/Christmas presents as they like to have her latest works of art on display. None live locally so don't see them that often in person.

A couple of our new neighbours recently bought DD some Xmas presents, not just little things but I'd estimate both spent around £30 which was unexpected and really kind of them! We thanked them at the time they passed the presents over of course, but is a homemade DIY thank you card cheap/naff? I'm a FTM so not sure of the etiquette these days!

Also do we buy them something in return next year? Neither have any kids or DGC so not like we'd swap gifts for the kids sort of thing.

A handmade thank you note is wonderful. Much more of a keepsake than a shop bought. In my opinion anyway.
