What age did you start brushing DCs teeth?

DD is 8 months old and has two teeth at the bottom. She also has two teeth growing at the top however they haven't fully grown outside of the gums yet.

DDs grandma on her dad's side bought her a little toothbrush set with fluoride toothpaste. I was actually thinking to do this but wondered when people started brushing their DCs teeth? Am I meant to wait until she's 1 or just get started now?

As soon as they get their first tooth.

@PinkWaferBiscuit

As soon as they get their first tooth.
This. Why would you randomly wait until they are 1?! Confused

I’ve always brushed from the moment teeth appear. I can’t remember exactly when that was but it was around 6 months old I think. We use the Colgate 0-2 fruit flavoured toothpaste and accompanying baby toothbrush.

As soon as they come through I thought

When they get their teeth
I dont know why you'd wait until age 1

HalloHello · 03/01/2022 10:44

Yep brush that tiny tooth as soon as you can see it. It's get them used to it as well so it's not as big of a battle. I love brushing their teeth!

jupitermars1345 · 03/01/2022 10:44

7 months here and no teeth but dd1 had two at 6 months and we started straight away really

DuneFan · 03/01/2022 10:44

Yes as soon as they get their first tooth

Start now while they're unlikely to argue and keep a consistent routine with it - that'll be hugely helpful in the toddler years!

MrsSkylerWhite · 03/01/2022 10:44

As soon as they appear. Very quickly becomes routine.

chineybumps · 03/01/2022 10:45

Okay great thank you. I thought it was as soon as but I remember reading an article when I was pregnant and parents were commenting saying they waited until their child was 1😂 just thought I'd ask

As soon as they erupt

PleasantBirthday · 03/01/2022 10:46

Even before their first tooth came up I started gently brushing the gums. By the time anything appeared they were well used to it (and didn't try to bat my hand away like they might have if I'd waited!!).

Sausagesausagesausage · 03/01/2022 10:47

As soon as they get them - so 4mo and 6mo for my two.

SpookyScarySkeletons · 03/01/2022 11:02

Erm as soon as they get their first tooth!

Can you imagine how manky your mouth would feel if you didn't brush your teeth for 6 months??

Fallagain · 03/01/2022 12:24

As soon as they get them.

jabmeupthe · 03/01/2022 12:35

Ds had his first teeth erupted at 13 months but I still used those finger strips to clean his gum. I would say from 6 months since he started weaning.

OddSocksSparklyDocsandDungaree · 03/01/2022 18:05

From about 4 months! I started massaging her gums with the brush, very, very gently. She now is 11 months old, has 6 teeth and grabs the brush from me to brush them herself! :)

When they have teeth/a tooth to brush

Jk987 · 03/01/2022 18:19

I've done it as often as I can since about 7 months but it's not always that easy, they push you away and turn their head.

Chely · 03/01/2022 18:28

As soon as they cut through. When younger I just let them chomp on a brush and as they got older tried to teach them to actually brush. By 3 years they all have electric toothbrushes as it does most of the work for them.

VaguelyInteresting · 03/01/2022 18:41

As above.

Gum wipes for gums once they started eating, can be good in addition to the brush on tender teething gums.

I found it easier to let them hold the brush and chomp for a bit, then go in yourself for a proper brush (DS was reluctant to give up the brush so I had two- one for him and one for me to use).

Also- remember you need to keep brushing with/ for them until at least 6 years (depending on their enthusiasm/thoroughness).
Let DC brush supervised, give them pointers and then get in there yourself for any additional bits.
