School PE kit

My dd1(3yrs) is about to start school. Due to covid restrictions there hasn't been much of an introduction, just a quick call of the headmistress. Do children at this age have PE, just wondering if she will need PE clothes?

Doubt they will change for pe until late Reception. Maybe plimsolls or indoor trainers. Ask on first day.

Hellocatshome · 30/12/2021 20:31

No one can tell you what that individual school does. Some have them change for PE, some they go in PE clothes all day on PE day, some dont bother as the clothes they are wearing should be fine for a little bit of PE. Does the school have a parents Facebook group or do you know any parents of kids that go. Parents with kids at the school are your best source of information.

School at 3? Are you in the U.K.?

I wouldn’t expect a 3 year old to have the sort of formal pe lesson that requires special kit. I would expect them to be on the move all day so would need sensible clothes similar to pe kit daily. Also suitable for getting covered in glue, glitter, paint and food!

dementedpixie · 30/12/2021 20:35

Is it school or nursery?

Smartiepants79 · 30/12/2021 20:36

Do you mean Pre-school?
They will tell you if she needs spare clothes.
At that age I’d be very surprised if they’re wanting to get them changed for PE.
Also unlikely she will do formal PE sessions.
Unless it’s a private school/nursery.
Have you phoned school and asked?

InTheLabyrinth · 30/12/2021 20:38

Pre school?
We only got 15 hrs/week, but no pe.

Datsandcogs · 30/12/2021 20:45

In our school Nursery uniform is the PE kit for main school. Due to C19 main school come in in their PE kits on days when they have PE.

Skyeheather · 30/12/2021 20:48

Best thing to do is email the school and ask. At three mine did yoga and gym but just in his normal clothes. He didn't need a PE kit until P1 (and he's not worn it yet!).

HalfShrunkMoreToGo · 30/12/2021 20:51

They didn't get changed in reception at DDs school, just did activity in their normal school clothes.

Soootired12 · 30/12/2021 21:11

Yes UK, Wales. She's starting full time, next week. The school has funding so she can start full time 8:45-3, some schools in the area don't have funding and they attend just in the morning. A little nervous, her being my first and she's still little, but she's been going to nursery 5 mornings a week which she loves, so hopefully she will enjoy school.
Thanks everyone for the advise, I'll have a look on Facebook, failing that will ask on her first day.

That seems a long school day for a 3 year old. Do they have to wear a uniform?

Wolfiefan · 30/12/2021 21:25

You mean pre school? Not primary school.

Soootired12 · 30/12/2021 21:26

Yes she has to wear a uniform, she's quite petite only just going into a age 3-4, been little difficult to get uniform that's not too big for her. I did express surprise at her starting a full day, but they find them starting a full day from the beginning see's them settling in much quicker. Although the head did say, if she was struggling or if it is too much she can do shorter days and build up to a full day.

I'm not sure how she will be. Nursery seem to think she will love school has she's quite confident, loves being busy and doing new things. She's very energetic, she can go to nursery in the morning, then do a 2 mile walk with me and still be planning has we get home what's she's doing next.

How is it school? She’s not old enough for reception and school years start in September? Do you mean a nursery that is attached to a school?

Soootired12 · 30/12/2021 21:28

She is going to a primary school, wearing uniform has advised by the head. I'm not what sort of class she will be in preschool, nursery etc.

I think it's ridiculous for a 3 year old to wear a uniform. When my 2 went to nursery at that age they had a polo shirt and nursery jumper but could wear whatever trousers/leggings/skirts they wanted. They also wore indoor shoes/slippers and then trainers/wellies, etc for outdoors

Soootired12 · 30/12/2021 21:54

Just had a little panic that I've somehow managed to sign her up for school before she is supposed to. The Welsh Gov website has the below statement:
"‘The childcare offer for Wales’ provides working parents with a mixture of childcare and early education for children aged 3 or 4.

Early education is also known as ‘Foundation Phase nursery’. It is mainly provided by schools where children learn through play."

The learning through play is reassuring, just hope she enjoys being there. I agree with the statements about the uniform, would much prefer her to be in something comfortable.

Why are people so confused. I knew exactly what you meant. Lots of school have a foundation stage that include a nursery class (so starting at 3), all children are funded for 15 hours but working parents meeting a certain criteria are eligible for 30 hours (so two sessions a day).

As for pe kit, if the nursery has a uniform it is usually tracksuit bottoms and a jumper which would be suitable for physical activity (although they wouldn't do formal PE lessons). I wouldn't worry, you could ask on her first day if you don't hear back from the school beforehand. Have you checked their website for the uniform policy? Or in the pack they give you when she was accepted?

Thanks, that's exactly it. This is all soo new to me never thought about the school having a website. Just been on there, every class has PE, they want same type of clothing as every other year and for her to bring it in a bag, so she'll be changing there. She's good at dressing herself but can need help at times.

Plenty of kids are in nursery full time 8-6ish from younger
SleepingStandingUp · 31/12/2021 01:57

Op it's fine, you haven't written her up into anything bizarre. DS started "school" aka nursery at a primary school as yours is at just before 3 (he got the funding for 2 year olds, England). And altho that wasn't in uniform, it now is. FROM TWO!!! But we're just half days here.

@WakeUpLockie it'll be the term after she's 3 for nursery based within a school and she'll stay in nursery until she moves to reception.

@dementedpixie if they're already in school polo and jumper not sure how much diff it makes if bottoms are in school colours rather than any colour

Vegetalienne · 31/12/2021 02:01

My kids went to nursery attached to a primary school at 3 and wore uniform. They didn’t do PE until they were in reception but other schools may do. Have you looked on the school website, there should be a list of what’s required.

Vegetalienne · 31/12/2021 02:01

They only did half days though.
