Baby 1 year old has chickenpox any tips

My LO has just turned 1 hes had a cold fever all last week and past few days I'm noticing red spots on his forehead. Was just keeping an eye on it but he now has red spots all over his chest and also few on his face and eyelids.

I'm a 1st time mum and absolutely panicking on how to keep him comfortable as he still hasn't recovered fully from his cold. Any tips or advice and if to use anything to use when spots get itchy would be helpful. Thanks

Oat baths and calamine lotion. See if you can get a HCP to confirm diagnosis from a picture too- IME chicken pox comes up rapidly; it's a matter of hours from noticing the first wave to the next waves appearing, rather than days.

Poxclin from Boots - £12 a bottle
But worked miracles on my 1 year olds

Calamine lotion- tbh my LO was just under 2 when she had it and was relatively fine, a bit off food so had more milk bottles, lots of CBeebies- oh and ensure their finger nails are cut down.

Keep the scabs moist, rather than drying them out. Use lots of lotion. It's the scabs drying that get really itchy, and the scratching off of the scab that causes the scars.

Put bicarb in the bath, and use gentle moisturising lotions and creams to keep the skin moist and soft.

An oat filled sock in the bath can give some relief. And you can get a soothing gel from the chemist - ask the pharmacist.

I’m sure you’re aware already, but you must not give ibuprofen with chicken pox: www.nhs.uk/conditions/chickenpox/

As soon as we started oat baths the spots improved, much less scarring.

We were doing 2-3 a day.

Oat baths.
Virasooth was great and prevented scars. I think it or a different brand also comes in a spray.

Ice lollies to keep up liquids.

Day four is the worst usually, and it really calms down after that. My DD was covered head to toe and we sat in the bath with her a lot, even in the middle of the night, also did a lot of nappy off time and just sat her on our laps with one of those puppy pad type mat things, used cloth nappies too as they didn't bother her as much.

We got various lotions, but the Luke warm baths were the biggest help

My 3 year old has it now. Hope this video helps. I've heard Vira Soothe is good but not sure if it's suitable for babies.

Go to the charity shop and get an armful of toys and books so there is something new and diverting. Naked as much as possible

Try not to panic! Mine had it at 6 months and looked like an alien. Not a cm on her body didn’t have one. I was actually scared to look on the cot every morning. It did pass quite quickly and she healed really well and only had one tiny scar. It’s unlikely your LO will be too bad as they’ve probably got it from fleeting contact. Mine was over exposed as two siblings had it first.
I tried virasoothe and poxcillin. Neither really seemed to calm her but then tried the chamomile lotion and she was much happier, I did use the poxcillin on her bottom though as it’s antibacterial and I was worried about them getting infected. I also used the oats in the bath and some dermol500 to avoid infection. No ibuprofen but regular paracetamol

user33323 · 29/12/2021 21:47

Someone above said it's the drying out that causes itching, and that is interesting because when two of mine had it, I regularly massaged them with coconut oil, and they didn't suffer with itchiness at all. The cold he's just had was probably pox, not something different. He can have Calpol but not ibuprofen. Don't use calamine either. Poxclin or virasoothe is meant to be good too. It's rife at the moment.

annlee3817 · 29/12/2021 21:48

Yes forgot that, ibuprofen is a massive no no with chicken pox, just paracetamol only

Another vote for the oat baths here. A colleague told me to run the bath water through a sock filled with oats and that worked really well.

Bless you OP, it's easy to worry but try not to. Our DS caught it at 5 months old courtesy of his cousin. He was a bit sleepy and gringy for a few days but thankfully didn't seem too badly affected. We gave calpol and he had one oat bath. It was me who went mad having to isolate at home with him for 10 days (this was 4 years ago, if only I'd known that covid was coming then 10 days wouldn't have bothered me!!)
