6 month old and endless overnight farting

For a while now my 6 month old has woken multiple times overnight- every 1hr or so. The cause of this seems to be trying to fart. If I start to feed him within a few minutes he’ll do a very squeaky one and then fall back asleep - similar if my husband picks him up and holds him on his tummy. He’s generally otherwise good, self settles of an evening and is a happy baby. Has anyone had this and have any suggestions for what might help? We’ve tried infacol, nappy off time and to top it all off I’ve given up dairy (breastfed). Weirdly he seems to go the first part of the night (the evening) fine but the farting really kicks in about 1am. Haven’t really started weaning yet. I also have a toddler so being a permanent zombie due to baby farts is not so good!

Do you make sure you burp him after each feed? Have you tried cycling his legs to help the farms out?

PanicBuyingSprouts · 26/12/2021 10:29

Haven’t really started weaning yet

No sure what this means sorry. Is he having solids at all?

My daughter didn’t burp, she farted, are you winding him properly? I winded her and she’d fart it out. Health visitor said it was quite common.

I’d guess he’s not being winded sufficiently

SweetBabyCheeses99 · 26/12/2021 10:36

You can’t “wind” a fart out like you can a burp. It’s created by gases in the intestines hence why it comes out of bottoms not mouths. Babies are pretty windy. How do you know he’s waking up though? Because he’s also crying?

Bluesycamore · 26/12/2021 10:47

@SweetBabyCheeses99 sorry yes he wakes up in discomfort starts grunting and moving around and will eventually cry.
@Bluntness100 I thought I was winding him properly in that he does a good burp (not every time mind you) but it’s maybe something I need to look at again
@PanicBuyingSprouts sorry wasn’t very clear, he’s only just turned 6 months yesterday, a couple of weeks ago we started giving him a couple of spoons of purée a day just to get a taste but the farting problem started a while before this - in fact has been going on for a few months - so didn’t think it was related to any solids. I keep feeling terrible thinking it must be my milk but cant find any correlation with food I’ve eating and already gave up dairy a month ago to see if that was it.

@SpiderFluff yes but maybe I’m missing something so will revisit thanks. I’ve been doing baby massage tummy (bicycle and tummy water wheel, I love you etc) x

Thanks for the clarification. Offering sfree lids once a day is weaning Smile

Try offering the food first thing, so that he has plenty of time to digest it before the nighttime.

Do you think that some baby massage before bed would help too?

SpiderFluff · 26/12/2021 11:51

Yeah it's so hard when they are uncomfortable and just need a fart

Sorry I’m a bit late to the party but I could have written this post! Would love to hear how you are getting on now and if you found anything to help?

Endlesslaundry123 · 25/09/2022 10:56

I wonder if it's not the farts waking him but actually he's waking between sleep cycles (which is common starting at the 4-month sleep regression), and while he's awake he feels the farts and pushes them out before falling back asleep. Does he know how to fall asleep independently at bedtime? Does he consistently wake every 1-2 hours every night?
