My newborn has a cold- help

Kanfuzed123 · 23/12/2021 16:24

So I had such a shitty cold from 40 weeks pregnant, gave birth at 41 weeks and my newborn has picked it up. Definitely not covid. But the poor lad is snotty has hell and now has the barking mucous cough. GP didn’t really have any advice except for nasal drops and watching if he sucks in under his ribs.

Anyone got any anecdotal things we can do, especially re the cough? X

Aww there is nothing worse than when they are I'll😭I have no practical advice but hope the wee man picks up soon!

One of those air
Misters would be good if theres a chemist open that sells them or put a saucer of water on the radiator to keep the air moist. Vicks on the soles of the feet is good for when they are bunged up.

Bowl of water in all the rooms to stop the air getting too dry

Snot sucker. I had the Nosefrida when dc were little, you can get it online. Disgusting but helps them sleep and feed if you give them a clear out beforehand.

Ah great shout! We actually have one already!

Can you use Vicks on a newborn ? We have snufflebabe chest rub and it says from 3months +, poor little mite is only 3 weeks and so far all he’s known is this snotty cold

DS had a cold at 5 weeks. It’s such an awful feeling watching them be I’ll and not being able to give medicine.

Dr recommended sitting with them in a steamy bathroom to help thin the mucus. We used the nasal drops too and they help clear out a bit of the congestion.

To be honest I remember him sleeping in my arms a lot as he settled better with his head raised.

Sounds like you’re doing amazingly well. Make sure to get as much rest yourself as you can (not always possible I know!) as you are still recovering.

Have you got saline drops? They dissolve the snot, they're amazing. Also if you're breastfeeding, slather your boob with Snufflebabe and they'll breathe it in while they feed. My November born was full of snot for months, you have my sympathy.

Put him in a reclining bouncy chair and take him into the bathroom while you have a hot shower. And put snufflebabe on your collarbone so he inhales it while feeding. Poor baba, hope he feels better soon.

Mrsmch123 · 23/12/2021 17:34

Ohh change my mind....We put some snuffle baby vapour rub on a old muslin and tied it to the cot out of the way of the baby. We also used the snuffle baby room vapour on a cloth and the. put it on the radiator.

Thank you!! I’ll try all of them.

His cough! It’s awful poor lad. Anyone got any cough suggestions?
