4 month old breastfed baby pooping every 7-10 days

So my LO, now 18 weeks, is going 7-10 days without pooping.
Around the time she eventually poops she gets incredibly gassy and stinks!
We'll end up having a very bad night of gas then poops the following day, and there's a lot of it!

Plenty of wet nappies in between.

Poop is the normal "sweet" smell despite the stinky gas.

She's been on infacol since about 8 weeks.

Has anyone else had similar?

Yes! Longest mine ever went was 15 days...we'd been at the GP on the 13th day and got some movicol. It got better once he started solids

@Jingleballsjellyballs thanks for replying! A quick google search shows me that's treated for constipation. Were your baby's poops normal consistency or hard as if constipated?

Hi! I read this and wanted to say, I have had this with both my children. They don't pop regularly as babies and both exclusively breastfed. I even saw a paediatric specialist as my son didn't poo for two weeks but was never in pain, then would do one big stinky poo. The doctor told me that it can be totally normal, as long as it isn't sore for the baby or as long as the poo is still runny and not pebbly. My daughter who is 6 months old still does a poo every 5/7 days and that's been fine for us as none of the poos have been hard or tricky. Apparently the bread milk should provide exactly what the baby needs, tailor made, so no excess or waste is natural.

However, I think once I gave him some fruit juice (prune) and cool boiled water mixed in a bottle, that was after two weeks and it did the trick. Your baby can have prune juice without you worrying as doctor advised that for sure! You can also get prune pouches. If poo is pebbly, from sainsburys xx

@coffeealldayandnight thanks for your reply! Her actual poop seems to be completely normal. I'm just more concerned about the pain she's in from the gas the night prior to pooping, poor thing.
My mum always tells me to eat plenty of pears to get her going!

Sorry for typos. And also, I've assumed you are breastfeeding, ignore it irrelevant x

Jingleballsjellyballs · 21/12/2021 22:18

No they were always soft like a korma consistency just an absolute bucket load of it! It made going out and about a logistical nightmare as approaching day 13/14 I'd know it was imminent! But baby was never upset or strained excessively etc

Jingleballsjellyballs · 21/12/2021 22:18

Sorry it wasn't movicol it was lactulose we were given

coffeealldayandnight · 21/12/2021 22:18

So when my daughter is trying to get one out, the smelly gas is horrific. Lying her on her tummy and letting her roll around seems
To help. But same as you. It's the next day where the magic happens GrinGrin

Becksiv · 21/12/2021 22:19

@coffeealldayandnight she's exclusively breastfed yes :)

Completely normal for breastfed babies - there’s not a lot of waste in breastmilk!

Becksiv · 21/12/2021 22:20

@coffeealldayandnight we've had a really unsettled evening so I'd be very surprised if she doesn't poop tomorrow. I flippin hope she does so she can cheer up the little poppet

@PotteringAlong thank you for your reply! I have read that that is the case I just wanted some more opinions as my first baby was always regular whilst ebf!

Oh god yeah. Ds2 was like that. Nappy changing was a military operation.

As soon as he started a poo, the nappy filled and needed to come off immediately and be replaced with a new one. No time to clean. New nappy filled up and replaced. Usually managed to clean him after the second fill but got caught out with an eruption in between every so often. There was one memorable time when he hit the wall 2 feet away while being cleaned.

Yep normal. Breastmilk is easily digested and there’s very little waste. I had this constantly from my mother who has only ever formula fed, insisting something was wrong as poo should be solid and they should poo every day.

Of course it was my milk not agreeing with them - but my mum is very anti- breastfeeding.

Off topic but I really hate the word poop! The americans can keep it. Poo poo poo poo😜
