Terrible nappy rash

donkeyhottie · 21/12/2021 18:12

After a bout of constipation, 28 w/o DS has been pooing for England all day. As a result his poor bum is red raw. There's some shiny bits that the cream won't stick to IYSWIM, and it's even now bleeding a bit. Thankfully he doesn't seem to be in much discomfort.

I've been using Mertainium and Sudacrem.

His bum has been fine until we started weaning, and it's definitely at its worst today.

Does anyone have any advice? Thank you

Just to add- he has nappy free time every day

Can he kick about with no nappy on for a bit?

Ohhhhmothermayi · 21/12/2021 18:14

Are you using yellow Metanium? If so it should only be a very thin layer

Other important thing is plenty of nappy off time when you can

my LO had really bad nappy rash at one point, it turned out to be thrush. Just one day of proper treatment and it was sorted. I’d get it checked if I were you.

Fallagain · 21/12/2021 18:20

Don’t use sudocream its awful and will irritate his skin. Give him as much nappy free time as possible. Bath daily, only use water and cotton wool when changing nappies and apply the thinest layer of metanium as you can.

RandomMess · 21/12/2021 18:22

It's expensive but unless you can get an urgent prescription for it buy Sprilon Spray it's designed to prevent/treat/protect bed sores.

Very thin layer goes on so I think the skin can still breath. It succeeded when all else had failed miserably.

Cutestbaby · 21/12/2021 19:03

Bepanthen was an absolute saviour for my little one. Put a very thick layer on and make sure that little ones bottom is dry after every change before applying a barrier cream.
Also if the skin is broken its not recommended to use metanium.

I hope it gets better soon!

YukoandHiro · 21/12/2021 19:04

Don't use wipes, use cotton wool and cooled boiled water. And I prefer very thick layer of bepanthen as a healing cream at every change

Hornicorn · 21/12/2021 19:14

Agree about the yellow metanium. But when the nappy rash got so bad that even that didn't work, I got prescribed some nappy rash cream which worked wonders. I think it was Timodine.

The dr diagnosed over the phone in about 1 minute without me having to visit the surgery. I would recommend giving the docs a call.

DSGR · 21/12/2021 19:22

Metanium alternated on separate days with sudocrem. Hours of nappy free time a day if possible. Warm bath and gently Pat dry every day to clean off any urine

Haggisfish3 · 21/12/2021 19:23

We found anything tomato based did this as an aside.

Immaculatemisconception · 21/12/2021 19:25

It could well be thrush.

WhyArePiratesCalledPirates · 21/12/2021 19:27

Cotton wool and water to clean and a hairdryer to make sure he's properly dry.

Skyla01 · 21/12/2021 19:27

Metanium didn't work for us. We found bepanthen much better. My LO got nappy rash when we started weaning too. I reckon her skin wasn't used to the new pH of her poo! Settled down after a few weeks, perhaps her skin adapted to it. I've also heard whipped egg whites are very good for nappy rash?! But not tried it myself.

Baggins83 · 21/12/2021 19:27

We were prescribed hydrocortisone cream and used sparingly it cleared up overnight.

wincarwoo · 21/12/2021 19:29

Also recommend Orabase. You can get it from the chemist. It works as a barrier and clears it up in no time.
It's not for babies particularly but it's like a thick Vaseline consistency.

Yellow metanium & zinc and castor oil barrier cream.

DS had the worst nappy rash our GP had ever seen, it was raw and weeping. After using all of the creams & tips above, the metanium and castor oil cleared it in a few days.

miltonj · 21/12/2021 19:36

Just get some hydrocortisone from the chemist and don't say it's for a baby. It's absolutely fine to use.

LincolnshireLassInLondon · 21/12/2021 19:37

Has he had anything new to eat? This happens to DC if he has too much tomato, satsuma or watermelon.

AnnaSW1 · 21/12/2021 19:48

Yellow Metanium and bare bum pretty much always works

Carpetmoth · 21/12/2021 19:55

When my daughter had nappy rash like this I saw a doctor and got a prescription for Canesten HC cream. This really cleared it up. I also stopped using wipes and cleaned with cloth/cotton wool and water at nappy time (drying with tissue after) until clear. She could only tolerate unscented baby wipes after that.

Baypony · 21/12/2021 20:00

We had this with DD. The only thing that worked was Canesten nappy rash cream (you can get it over the counter at a pharmacy) with vaseline on top to stop it coming off. Good luck, nappy rash is grim for all involved ☹️

LillyLeaf · 21/12/2021 20:04

I found Weleda great for my DS, clears up very quickly.

TheHungriestMama · 21/12/2021 22:02

Keep a food diary to see if anything causes worse poos/skin.

Check in with GP to be sure it's not thrush.

Make sure skin is wiped with cotton wool and water only. No wet wipes, too many chemicals and very abrasive on sore bums.

Dry his bottom and nappy area off each change very gently, just blotting moisture away rather than rubbing it away.

Lots of nappy free time, if you, buy a big splash mat or just a waterproof table cloth. Let him crawl about on that with toys for 10/15 mins every hour or every couple hours if you have capability, ideally after a poo nappy so at least you know you've got time until the next one!

Metanium needs to be a super thin layer but we found Bepanthan amazing too, a very thick layer of it. Or baby aquaphor was great too, again a thick layer.
