My 7 mo, has had very hard poos, lots of straining and crying before she poos. When she poos settles more. She is bf and has been having varied diet of fruit, veg, meat, etc. We have avoided banana as know it can lead to constipation. Try to give her extra water and lots of massage to help her go, sometimes helps. Tried lactulose before but made her very windy, she is already v.windy baby!!! she has been on medication for reflux, omeprazole so that might make it worse. Do prunes help, have tried them last few days but no better??? Any ideas?

I used to soak raisins in water for a few hours then give the water to DS to drink.

Maybe it would help...?

i avoided banana in my own diet and am eating lots of grapes which for my 7mo has done the trick are you the same person who posted on this under health at the same sort of time tonight? if not tehre are 3 of us out there with the same problem !

pevie · 19/12/2007 21:39

No didnt post under health tonight. You say it solved it with YOU eating grapes. V.interesting, as I totally dont eat enough fruit nowadays, no time. Do you think that your diet causes them constipation rather than what they are eating?

How strange have just posted the same question more or less, though my son can't even manage to do a poo at the mo, poor thing.
He has been distraught today with lots of straining and screaming.
Am trying lactulose, as well as lots of water and diluted fruit juice.
Also bought some prunes and cooked them in apple juice, am hoping this will help. Will report back.

nowwearefour · 19/12/2007 21:44

i think clearly is caused by what they are eating but definitely what i am eating has an impact. nothing else changed in my diet except me giving up citrus for other reasons. my hv recommended it and it worked. it is odd as at 9.25pm someone else posted with the exact same post. you should talk to her about it too! check out under health!!!

orange juice from freshly squeezed oranges is the advise my sis got for her ds also 7 months and bf! worked well on my dd too when she gets this

pevie · 19/12/2007 21:49

Pannacotta, I have been doing prunes for last 3 days. She has been passing poos today but still brick hard so not sure how much its helping. I wonder if shes not getting enough liquid, although I bf and do it several times a night still so not sure. Her diet hasnt changed drastically except for upping the fruit to help her go so not sure why problem now. Does it affect your Lo sleep?

hi when i was BF my DD my MW recommended for me to eat oranges and it worked a treat!! a bit too well really as DD was swimmin in poo for a few days and then it settled itself out!! worth a try!!
xx ei xx

Pannacotta · 19/12/2007 21:55

Yes my DS has been up every 2-3 hours for the last 2/3 nights (though he wasn't close to sleeping through before, but this is def more than usual).
He has been very upset and unsettled as he really needs to poo but can't, hence all the straining and screaming .
I am trying to get him to drink more water, as he does eat quite a lot given he has only been having solids for a month.
Other than that and the massage/warm baths am at a loss.

My ds had terrible constipation much of the time at that age. I swear he was really grumpy because of this.

What came good for us in the end I think (as maybe he just grew out of it - who knows) was bio live yoghurt - a nutritionist friend recommended this. I didn't give him loads as actually yoghurt is meant to be a constipator.

Bananas are meant to be really bad aren't they

shreddies · 19/12/2007 22:03

Lentils work for my ds - I cook them with carrots and parsnips so they're really sweet. Definitely clears things out

pevie · 20/12/2007 16:52

Thanks. Have been giving lentils before but not every day. Someone told me today that giving them straight fresh orange can help so I will try that. Also someone else said kiwi, anyone tried it?

Pevie just wanted to say that lactulose worked for my DS who was very bunged up.
Kiwi is supposed to be good but I think there is general advice to avoid it till a bit further down the line, esp if there are any family allergies as it can trigger reactions in some.
We have been giving DS very diluted apple juice too which am sure has helped.
Much relief all round (snigger!)...
