What age for make up?

What age did your girls a start wearing make up? I have two 9 year olds who have no make up nor have they asked for any but apparently some girls in their class have make up. I started wearing light make up at 16 so was not expecting it for a long while yet.

Really? In primary? Wouldn’t be allowed at our school even nail polish isn’t are you sure they are not just saying that because they want some? I’m getting my dd 10 some for Xmas but it’s just for dressing up in the house and kids makeup, I wouldn’t allow it outside

Comedycook · 19/12/2021 18:32

My DD is 11 and has never shown any interest in make up or said that her friends have.

I wouldn't allow any make up in primary school except some lip balm

I don’t mean they wear make up at their school but they apparently have make up at home. It made me wonder is al.

Yeh make up at home for 9 year olds is fine for dress up! Not really the same as a teen wearing it outside.

ShowOfHands · 19/12/2021 18:47

DD is y10 and has never worn make up. Nearly all of her friends are boys but the rest of the girls all seem to wear make up and have done since y8 ish. Her friends outside of school (aged 14 to 18) mostly don't wear make up either.

They probably mean something like this. Not what you’re imagining

(I'm 40 and don't wear make up either!)

I have a 15 and an 18 year old.

Allowed both to wear eyeliner, eye makeup and lip gloss / lipstick etc from 12.

From 14, I said that they could wear foundation for nights out etc, but encouraged them not to wear it every day as it exacerbated spots.

18 year old has just got her first pot of foundation. 15 year old happy not covering her skin yet. Both can see that their friends who wore foundation early on got trapped into covering spots with make up, creating more spots etc. that said, witch hazel do a great spot concealer that actually heals spots at the same time and it covers up the occasional blemishes.

But maybe my two have been lucky in having good skin (but do they also have good quality face wash, good routines etc), so who knows!

My now 11 yr old has had proper make up since she was around 9 and wears it or not as she sees fit. It's not something that I make a fuss of either way so it's not something that becomes either a forbidden fantasy (so to speak) or expected every day. Her older sister has no interest and never wears it, the youngest is in yr7 so not allowed it in school but will be allowed when she reaches yr9 at which point it will be her choice to wear it or not.

My Granddaughters are 10 and 7, and both have lip balms and lip glosses. The eldest one wears eyeshadow for very special occasions (probably twice a year) like Christmas. The younger one likes to have her nails painted (toenails, not fingernails, because of school)

DinosaurOfFire · 19/12/2021 18:51

My 9 year old was given some lip gloss and nail polish by her BF for her birthday, but she doesn't really know what to do with it and just opens it, looks at it, and closes it again- she is the kind of child who likes to keep things pristine though if they are special to her. Some of the girls in my 6 years olds class have their own dressing tables with play makeup, but equally there are girls in my 9 year olds class (year 5) who have no interest in it, a bit like my daughter. It varies. I figure that we may get her some play makeup for her 10th birthday, the Claires accessories type, if she starts showing na interest. But I don't think there's really a need for it.

Treez21 · 19/12/2021 18:54

My dd probably had it from 7. It's just for play. I always adored makeup, but not so much these days. She's not wearing it for school!

My 10 year old does my eye make up regularly. Even if I'm not going out! She just likes doing it and it always looks better than when I do it, lol. She has eye shadow, liners, mascara, lots of nail varnish and a variety of lip glosses. Rarely wears them outside. Just likes experimenting. She will do her eyes and apply lip gloss if we are going 'out out' which is very infrequent and I'm good with that.

I wore lipgloss at home or parties (those cute novelty sets you get in Claire’s) when I was in primary school. I wore concealer and powder aged 11 (I had spots). I gradually added more makeup items from then.
