Memory foam mattress

To cut the long story short, my 20 month old co sleeps with me and DP has been banished to a pull out bed next to us which is killing his back.

We currently have a king sized be, but toddler is a bed hog so DP can’t squeeze in and gets pushed out by a moody toddler.

I am considering upgrading to a super king and trying memory foam, specifically the Emma, but I’ve read conflicting things on how safe memory foam is for a toddler.

Does anyone know?

we got the firmest mattress we could (we got the ikea hovag) as we wanted to have the option of a safe bedsharing mattress for a newborn too should we have another. don't know if that helps!

MrsPatrickDempsey · 17/12/2021 21:36

The Emma is really firm....

Memory foam mattress get really hot. I wouldn’t want to bed share with a hot toddler in the summer on a memory foam mattress.

I wasn't aware of memory foam being unsafe for babies/toddlers. I'm currently cosleeping with a three month old on a spring mattress that has a memory foam top half. I think as long as you're careful with not overheating with other bedding it should be ok (anyone please correct me otherwise?)

Whathefisgoingon · 17/12/2021 22:06

Thanks all. I’m not sure if my concern is the reason others have said memory foam is “unsafe”, but wouldn’t it be easy for them to suffocate if they slept face down? With memory foam the whole point is that you “sink” into it.

We have a super-king (Emma, as it happens) and it’s still not big enough for both parents AND 1yo! 😂

Whathefisgoingon · 18/12/2021 12:04

@BerthaYoung that is not what I wanted to hear AngryGrin

We've had a memory foam mattress (standard double) for many years. We had to co sleep since birth, I used a bedside drop down crib on my side. DD has had a memory foam mattress since we bought her a single bed aged about 20 months, as she climbed out of the cotbed. We still intermittently coslept until she was about 4, first in our bed & then in hers after we bought it.

BerthaYoung · 20/12/2021 15:08

@Whathefisgoingon Sorry! Your DC might be less wriggly than mine - who prefers to sleep either across the width of the bed or lying on my neck... 🤷🏻‍♀️ I admit I am very particular about sleep space and now find a kingsize bed too small to share 🤦🏻‍♀️

SamanthaVimes · 21/12/2021 14:09

I’d be happy to share with a toddler on memory foam but I wouldn’t with a newborn. If you’re not having any more DC then obviously not an issue but if you’re not finished I’d get something firmer/cooler.

We have an “extra firm” super king because we wanted the option to share from birth with any new DC and it’s bloody brilliant even though DD sleeps like a starfish Grin

You definitely shouldn’t share with a little baby on memory foam, risk of overheating. Luckily ours was a topper so just took it off when had to co sleep with my DS at 4 months. I’d be more relaxed with a toddler though

Opalfeet · 21/12/2021 23:15

Shared with my two on a memory foam. Had a double between me and the baby though so was quite a way apart. Then they both had a memory foam mattress in their cot. I think you need to assess the risk.

DasherDotComet · 22/12/2021 06:49

We got an emma premium recently, bit more supportive than a standard emma I believe. Love it but it is firm. I’d have no concerns letting my nearly 1 year old on it but I’m not into co-sleeping so maybe not the best to advise!
It’s got a cool protect cover on it that’s meant to regulate temperature. My partner runs hot and yet hasn’t complained about heat.
Also my back used to be ruined but it’s cured now so would recommend for that

Starcaller · 22/12/2021 06:58

We have an Emma and have co-slept since DD was a baby. I just bought one for her own bed when she finally makes her way into it Grin
