Buggy board or double stroller

Hi, just looking for some advice My DD will be 22 months when baby arrives, she's a very confident Walker so just don't know if it's worth getting her a buggy board with a seat, a normal buggy board or a double buggy!

Does she still nap?
My eldest still napped for about a year after the younger one was born, so a doubke buggy was very helpful for going out with both of them.

Is she very tall?
I tried a buggy board I borrowed from a friend, but DC1 was so big, it was really awkward and cumbersome to use.

How much walking do you do?

We live in a town where you don't really need to drive even from one side to the other. Plus we do a lot of countryside walking / national trust properties etc. We do many miles so we brought a double pushchair.

It's handy for the eldest to nap in on a long day out too. He still goes in on a long day out / long long walk in the countryside now at 3.75 to rest his legs, occasionally nap or snack!

If you generally go most places in the car, just go for a buggy board.

I would get a double personally

Double. Absolutely.

Daisysandviolets · 17/12/2021 18:03

She's only little but we are do like to go for a walk! Doubles are so expensive! Any recommendations?

Yes second hand!

MindyStClaire · 17/12/2021 18:10

Double.

We walk everywhere and have a 27 month gap, the double was invaluable.

Remember, just because she's a good walker now doesn't mean she always will be. At 22 months you have the bulk of toddler obstinace still to come Grin

AllTheUsernamesAreAlreadyTaken · 17/12/2021 18:17

I stuck with a single and a buggy board. My eldest was 20 months when my second was born. She was a confident walker and I hated how cumbersome a double buggy was. A nightmare in shops or smaller spaces.
She was having one afternoon nap by then but we always came home for it anyway so it didn’t make any difference to us. If she frequently napped him her pram, I would have struggled though.

CrabbyCat · 17/12/2021 18:17

I had a 21 month gap, I made do with a single with buggy board and a single until DC2 was about 7 months but then got the double. My issue at the time was that DC1 still napped, and DC2 got too heavy to have in a sling for the nap period. As DC2 got older i used the single plus board for shops, but found I had a real issue with DC2 not liking having DC1 on the board and kicking him. Once DC2 got to age about 18 months she also started having tantrums about being on the board like DC1, but wouldn't stand reliably on it. We got a side by side and it's been great, it's meant long days out haven't been a problem as they have always been both entirely happy sitting next to each other. However, I've kept using the single plus board for short trips to the shops, so it really depends what you want to he doing.

We have the Baby jogger City Mini double, bought 2nd hand. It's got very tall seats we used it for long days out for years and have definitely had our money's worth!

Same here. 14 month age gap and we have that buggy. It's been invaluable. I bought the carry cot attachment so I could use it from birth for my youngest.

Our buggy board wasn't used much, it was too awkward and only useful on flat pavements. Plus my eldest likes to jump off suddenly which wasn't too safe.

TheEncapsulingManger · 17/12/2021 18:59

I picked up a phil and Ted's double, with both seats, rain covers, sun covers, various attachments like cup holders, AND a buggy board (the easy to clip on and off ones), for £120 second hand. So I switch between 2 seats, and 1 seat with buggy board as needed. It's EXTREMELY easy to swap them over, so I just ask my eldest which he prefers that day, or if I know we are going on awkward routes I just take the 2 seats, as the buggy board is a bit cumbersome on sloping paths and cobbles etc.

So I'd say get the phil and Ted's and do what I did! I thought it looked pretty glum with a seat basically in the basket area, but my two both love that seat, as they think it's like a cosy den.

Not sure how it is from birth, though I know it lies flat, but I used a sling til my baby could sit up enough for the seat (about 4mo I think - though born in lockdown 1, so we weren't exactly using the sling or buggy much!).

jennyt82 · 17/12/2021 19:08

I had 23 months between my eldest 2 and I used a buggy board when I was on my own and individual pushchairs when I was with my mum/husband for the first few months. My eldest was so independent a double buggy would of been a waste of money for me.

mayblossominapril · 17/12/2021 19:11

Definitely the city mini double. Mine was £50 second hand. Apparently the city mini double GT is better
Seats are big, it’s easy to push and fold

giraffes2021 · 17/12/2021 19:13

I have a 22 month gap I got a buggy board was an absolute nightmare so got an out and about double nipper. Worth every single penny !!! Saved my sanity and so easy to use

Rno3gfr · 17/12/2021 19:15

Another thing you have to consider is the possible tantrums when you’re out and about. My son was easy going and keen to please until he got to 2.5, then all hell broke loose. I started strapping him into the pram to avoid tantrums when I was in a rush. Can you get a cheap double in case you need it and a buggy board for the main pram? You can get decent second hand doubles for under £100.

BlusteringBoobies · 17/12/2021 19:19

I'm in almost exactly the same position as you and due number 2 any day now.

We walk the dog most days in a park which is about half a mile away on roads and DC1 still sits in a buggy on the way there and back.

I looked at buggy boards but I found I had to stoop quite a lot to bend over DC1 and still be able to push.

So I narrowed it down to Mountain Buggy Duo, Bugaboo Donkey, Baby Jogger Double and Out and About double

I've just been to a massive baby shop this afternoon and decided on the out and about double.

Bugaboo is way too expensive and the toddler seat is so small!
Mountain buggy I felt the toddler seats were too laid back even 'upright' and on 4 wheels it felt heavy
Baby Jogger just looked enormous next to the others and I felt it was massive

So I settled on out and about. Wider toddler seats, 3 sturdy wheels for the park, easy to push without feeling too big and you can get a carrycot that goes straight over one of the seats. I can see them second hand for c£150 so seems reasonable. It also folds easily without removing the seats.

Eileen101 · 17/12/2021 21:19

Mountain buggy duo is brilliant for us. So easy to steer, comfortable for the kids.

T0rt0ise · 18/12/2021 13:03

Both! We have 21 months between ours and have a buggy board on the single for things like farm parks etc and then a double for dog walks/when we need to get placed on foot.

MsChatterbox · 18/12/2021 13:07

Second hand out n about nipper

Dollywilde · 18/12/2021 13:14

I’m expecting DC2 in May and will have a 21 month gap. We’ve just bought a second hand iCandy Orange for £300. DD is a very confident walker but she refused to nap anywhere other than my arms or the pram, and if this DC follows suit we’ll be doing some longgg walks this summer! I wanted a tandem so as to avoid the door width issue (we have a narrow garden gate).

We already had a single icandy so I sold our single for £200, meaning the new one only cost me £100. It’s in good nick and as it’s a single to double my plan is just to adapt it down to a single once DD is better on the buggy board (it has an integrated one). Plus, I liked with my last iCandy that the bassinet is ok for overnight sleeping. One less bit of kit to cart around when we see family!

We would never have spent £1000+ on a new iCandy so figured this was the best of all words!

Dollywilde · 18/12/2021 13:14

Disclaimer: I do not work for iCandy 😂

Just to play devil's advocate - I have a 21mo gap and held off buying anything to see if needed. Glad didn't waste money as haven't used pram once for older daughter. We go for daily walks and have had no issue. Might be worth saving your money and seeing how it goes? Good luck! X
