When would you take to the GP for a temp?

My son is 10 months old. For the past week he's had a temp on and off and just generally been grouchy and more tired than usually (although not lethargic or floppy of course!).

He has had a Covid test which was negative. And apart from the temp doesn't seem to have any other symptoms.

He was sent home from nursery on Monday for a temp of 38.8 and I took him straight for a Covid test and he then slept most of the day when we got home (his temp had come down with Calpol).

He seemed okay Tuesday just a little clingier than usual but no temp, gave Calpol just in case, Covid result came back negative so hoped just a 24hr thing and he went back to nursery yesterday and seemed fine.

They contacted me again today to say his temp had spiked again and again he's slept a lot at home when I picked him up. He's back asleep now but his temp was again in the 38+ numbers this evening.

I'm of course giving Calpol to bring them down which does work but I just get very worried.

He was in hospital a short while ago with bronch, I don't think it's that, he doesn't have a cough or anything but he was very poorly on oxygen and he deteriorated very quickly that time that any sign of illness now gets me panicked.

I feel like I've not stopped taking him to the doctor recently! (Twice with the bronch and another time just before that when he had the runs for longer than I was happy with).

Is it too soon to see the GP? Or should I get him in?

My mind just goes straight to things like meningitis ect.. Sad

Phone 111 they will advise

I would call 111, just to get advice, and you can probably see your GP tomorrow. Don't wait til the weekend because care is more difficult to access etc. Make sure that he's taking enough fluids if he's sleeping a lot, and he has wet nappies. Don't worry about solids, as long as he's having milk and water. Good luck

What led you to take his temperature?

GrandOldFart · 16/12/2021 20:03

@santasmuma

What led you to take his temperature?
Nursery took it on Monday as they said he seemed not himself and warm to touch.

I've just been checking it on and off since when he's seemed more sleepy or whingey.

That's really handy thank you

I guess part of me worries as well because it's his only symptom. So he doesn't have a cough, he doesn't have any cold symptoms, no throwing up or diarrhea almost like there's no visible explanation for the temp if that makes sense? I'd feel a bit better, as horrible as it is, if he was visibly unwell like with a cold or something that I could say was probably the cause of it. But he doesn't.
